This just happened.
We have twin 454. I use 40 weight oil. Have done for 1700 hours. Oil pressure on upper helm gauges has always been the same. Starboard 60 when started and Port 50 when started. After running for an hour 50 and 40.
I changed the oil 20 hours ago and pressures were as before but over 8 hours of running Port was 20 and starboard was 40. Turned both engines off for 2 minutes and the pressures went to 50 and 40. Over the next 2 hour hours they dropped 10 each. Turned of both engines and they went back to 50 and 40. Changed oil filter in Port and pressure stayed at 40 for 3 hours then started to drop. Got to 30 after 4 hours and Starboard had dropped to 40. Turned both engines off and pressures went to 50 and 40.
I used to use what ever 40 weight oil I could find. I changed to Shell Rotella as it seemed to be popular on this site. This is the second oil change for it. I change oil at 100 to 120 hours. I have used WIX filters for a few years.
Oil that came out of filter looked clean and there were no solids in it.
I will take WIX filter I changed after 20 hours to sales place and see if they can get WIX to look at it.
Rotella oil seems better than others as I did not use any in the 100+ hours since the last oil change. I used to use about ½ to 1 quart in 100 hours.
Any one have any idea what the problem could be?
In my old car when I had sticky valve lifters I put in a quart of ATF. Would an additive help?
I still have 16 quarts of Rotella.

Hi Folks

Stumbled across your forum while searching for info. I have purchased a 2006 Sea Ray 195 Sprt with 4.3 MPI and what I think is a bravo 1 engine. History of the boat is that it sat on a canal in the states for a year unused then was shipped to here in Oz were it has sat for 2 years more. I get the boat tomorrow.

I have now got my hands on it and have my work cut out for me so may have a few questions. Any suggestions for what work I shoud do first will be most welcome. I have not run the boat but turned it over to ensure it was not seized.

First Question - I was orgininally told it had a alpha 1 on it but now he thinks its a bravo. As the drive was sitting in water I'm thnking it would need a rebuild )it turns with no issues)so have started looking for a second hand one. I have found a really good alpha 1 gen 2 at a great price with every thing (including a 3lt merc). If i do find it is a bravo what on the sea ray, is it a big issue changing to the alpha? Assuming I have everything inside and outside from the donor unit, will i need to but anything further. Will the transome hole be a problem.

Appreciate any resonse.

I have a sea ray 95 330 DA with twin 7.4l carb engines. while out fishing today, I restarted my engines and my starboard engine failed to start. Just crank crank crank
took off air cleaner and looked down throttle and did not see any fuel running in while cranking engine.

changed tank to port tank, as port engine running fine. No fuel after giving it a few cranks.

took some carb cleaner and ran it down the throttle, engine fired up, then stopped once no more carb cleaner.

My guess is it is fuel pump. before I run out and buy one, can anyone give me a more scientific way to validate that the fuel pump is my issue

also how hard is it to replace, as the mechanic in my marina is backed up three weeks

I always add the lead substitute to the 93 octane, but another thread in here mentioned screw the 93, just use 87.

What is the harm in doing so? With the 93 prices climbing ever higher, just looking at options.

All that I have access to is the E10 (10% ethanol), but always put the stabil marine in with the lead sub.
Suggestions appreciated.

My 2011 260 DA has the Mag 350 MPI with Bravo 3 . No low water intake, just 2 inlets on side of outdrive.
water pressure ( off the well at the marina) when hooked up to the muffs on the outdrive for a flush is not sufficient to avoid the low water pressure alarm ( i assume the pump is pulling less water than if i were sitting in the water)
i'm looking to have a hookup installed in the outdrive to connect a hose directly to the outdrive for the flush -
is this a good idea ?
any idea on average cost to install -l including parts ....? just wondering what to expect from a cost standpoint.

Hi,

I have a 2004 SeaRay 190 with the 3.0L Mercruiser that won't start. When I turn the key the engine doesn't turn over at all. There is just a single click that can be heard from around the starter motor.

I checked all and cleaned all the connections like the ground and the cable going from the battery to the starter but that didn't make a difference. Next I thought it was the battery and since that was easy to replace I bought a new one with the hopes of installing it and being on the water this weekend. After installing the new battery the problem still persists.

My next suspect was the starter motor. I removed that and hooked it up to a known good battery (12.44V) and grounded it. I then jumpered between where the battery connects to the starter and where the ignition wire connects (2 & 1) on the image shown below.

All that happens is there are sparks at point 1. The starter doesn't spin or try to engage at all. So my question is this: Have I found the source of my problem keeping me off the water or is this not how one would test a starter? Any thoughts or helpful suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Hello,

I've been chasing a problem with my port side mercruiser in my 1997 Sea Ray Sundancer. Its a 7.4L carburated inboard connected to a V-Drive. When I'm up on plane (3200-3400RPM), I periodically get a stutter in the engine. The RPM's drop 1000-1500RPM for a split second and then the engine returns back to the cruising RPM. I have performed the following with no impact:

-Replaced all spark plugs, gapped to the recommended 0.035"
-Replaced spark plug wires
-Replaced Distributor Cap
-Replaced Distributor Rotor
-Replaced Distributor Pick-up
-Inspected the main engin harness. Unplugged, and re-plugged it in a few times.

I did have a mechanic take a look at the issue and they confirmed that it is loosing spark when the engine stutters, so I am fairly confident that it is on the electrical side.

The only items I can think to replace next are the coil or the ignition system. I'm hoping it is the coil (Cheaper of the two components).

I do see the stutter at no-wake speeds, however, it does not drop RPM nearly as much at this speed (Maybe a few hundred RPM)

Am I missing anything else? Any idea what could be causing this other than what I already replaced?

Thanks for your help!
Bob

Well as you know I'm having some transmission issues and I'm looking for a manual online to order and also just looking around for known issues. But all the manuals I found don't match my model number nor can I find and velvet drives with my gear ratio or serial number. Any ideas?
My model number is 20-01-004
gear ratio 2.040:1 and serial number is 5799

ive looked everywhere. The only luck i had so far was with google and the only thing that came up was one on eBay and there's no info on the description.

Its attached to a 7.4mpi mercruiser and I'm pretty sure it's a straight shaft but may be a down angle.

also one side (I forgot which) has a whine when put in reverse is that normal due to Lh prop?

i have personally experienced the effect of heat soak from a hot engine causing the temperature in the engine compartment rising to the point it...

i have personally experienced the effect of heat soak from a hot engine causing the temperature in the engine compartment rising to the point it causes problems with electronics in the compartment....i have also noticed several threads over time with concerns about high engine compartment heat....i am a little surprised that boat manufacturers do not offer solutions on removing heat from the engine compartment....

i have an idea on how to evacuate the engine compartment heat i thought i would float by the group to determine if it is worth while and how effective it would be......

as we all know the bilge blower intake is located in the bottom of the bilge since its primary function is to remove potential flammable gases out of the bilge....the exhaust for the bilge blower is usually routed through louvres on the transom or sides of the hull....some people advocate running the bilge blower to help remove some of the heat from the engine compartment....while i have no doubt this method works to some degree, i feel its effectiveness is substantially limited due to the fact that heat rises and would naturally collect at the top of the engine compartment...since the bilge blower intake is located low in the bilge its ability to suck out heated air from the compartment would be limited....

i was thinking about installing a second blower wired to a separate on/off switch...the intake for this blower would be positioned near the top of the engine compartment...the blower exhaust would be connected to the existing bilge blower exhaust duct with a 'Y' fitting.....with this set up the second blower could be activated when the primary desire is to exhaust heat from the engine compartment....if/when the primary concern is to remove gases from the bilge the original blower can be activated separately...or both the bilge blower and the heat exhaust blower could be activated at the same time if desired.....

what problems does the group see with this idea?.....do you think it would be effective in removing heat from the engine compartment?....i would likely want to use a low noise squirrel cage blower for the heat exhaust function since it would be activated when the engine is at idle or stopped.....my normal in-line bilge blower is too loud to be used like this.....

thanks for any thoughts or input....
