When either of these start to fail what are the symptom?

My generator works well on one half. The other goes off under load after running it for half an hour or so. At first I thought it was the inverter/charger failing, but I can now get the same failure by running two 15 AMP electic heaters.

The generator sounds like it is going to stall when the one side fails. A couple of time the engine went off, but I could start it immediatly. It is not hot. The exhaust water is cool and the generator motor does not smell hot and when shot with temperature gun it is 160F. The outside of the generator contol boxes is 95F to 110F. I run the blower when I run the generator.

If the generator does not go off the good side continues to deliver power to the items on that side. I have a watermaker on the good side and it does not go off when the other side shuts down.

The govenor seems fine it does not search for RPM.

I was thinking of just replacing the two items and seeing what that does. Are there other items that might cause this kind of problem?

On our way north but can get parts shipped to a port.

Other alternative is to buy a HONDA Generator. Not too safe but we would have power.

I would assume (but not sure) there would have to be a frequency match and I have no idea what frequency mine is or if it can be changed at the receiver. Boat is 2000 SR410

I've been told its better to not keep your charger turned on when not using your boat and it sits in your slip. A mechanic told me for our size boat (370 DA) that our battery bank would more than keep a charge and to only turn on the charger when you think the batteries are getting somewhat depleted from not starting the engines, running DC, etc,.

What was happening was I was keeping the charger on whenever we were in the slip and I believe I was frying the batteries. The water level in each was down a few quarts over the course of 2-3 months.

Just curious as to what others are doing.

Thanks

I have 10 six volt golf cart batteries as house batteries. New in 2006.
On shore power they charge at 140 AMPs at 12 volts. On the generator 8KW Quicksilver they generator drops off if I charge them at full rate. It works fine if I charge AT 80% This is about 100 AMPs at 12 volts.
The generator is rated at 33 AMPs 120 volts per side. I can load it 30 AMPs on both sides without either side dropping out.
QUESTION
Do you feel the six volt batteries are shorting out at a high charge rate?
I have load tested them and they indicate they are good.

Since it's a 3 wire interface, that makes me think that it might be using a standard communication protocol. I was wondering if any of the stock systems are transmitting NMEA, or similar, codes that can be used up by other equipment. My initial impression is that it's unlikely, but I figured I'd ask just in case.

I'm just trying to plot out my electronics upgrades/modifications, and would like to know what is and isn't possible with the stock systems. Thanks!

I've searched archives and manuals on the Searay site but can't find a schematic for any of the 1993 sport boats. Does anyone know what size breaker is used to feed the accessories on the dash. It looks like a factory installed breaker right beside the battery switch but it's too worn to read. Need to know whether or not I can feed my new gadgets from this line or if I need to install an additional breaker. Need power for plotter, sounder, vhf, and some extra interior led's. I'd guess another 14 amps max with all gadgets running and vhf transmitting on high power. Thanx everyone.

Hi all,
I just bought a 1998 Sea ray 270 Sundancer,
twin engines , 3 batteries , no generator
I have a few questions I couldn't find in the owner's manual,
1- wich engine charges wich battery, if each engine charges 1 battery , what charges the 3rd battery ?
2- I have 2 battery switches on says on/off and the other says 1/2/both , what do those switches do ? And on what setting do i put them while on the water if i want to stay all day on the water with the engines off, and gps or other accessory on
3- what does the emergency switch do on the console

ps. It might be a real simple thing but I couldn't find it in the manual or anywhere online

thanks alot,

I was getting Old Skool ready for this summers and had everything ready. Sure enough I went to raise the outdrive and it would not come up. I removed and cleaned all the connection at the pump and tested the switch with a volt meter. All tested good until I checked the trim sensor wires. The insulation flaked off back into the loom and the wire fell apart in my fingers.

Does anyone have a wiring diagram for the sensor wiring and can it be bypassed to get the thing up so I can move it off my driveway?

The pump only has one big solenoid on it not the double like many units have.

So I've been doing a ton of needed rewiring on my 270, and its been going well but I have this odd issue with my battery charger. I have a cockpit stereo and amp that was added by the previous owner and placed on two separate breakers on my dc panel so that you can have the choice to run the amp or not by the breaker vs always turning on when ever the stereo turns on. Works great but whenever I turn the amp on I get this really loud humming buzzing noise from the charger in my bilge. Could it just be that the stereo power and the power leads on the amp are running off two different batteries and somehow that's goofing something up on the charger? Don't really know why that'd be a problem but... Just unsure what I need to check or if I'm doing harm. Any ideas what could be the issue?

I just started doing some of my own maintenace since the local SeaRay service shop I used to use went belly-up. I wanted to turn over the engine after an oil change while trailered in the driveway. With cooling water flowing to the outdrive inlets, the ignition would do nothing, not even turn over. Battery was charged and checkout was fine per the SmartMaster controls. Is there something else preventing engine start? I've never had a problem starting for 6 years when the boat is in the Lake.
