Hello All,

Last season towards the end of the season my port trim tab stopped working and being a relative newbie to boat repair I held off on fixing it myself since it would be at the mechanics in a few weeks for winterizing and I'd have him look at it then. Well he told me it was low on fluid and it was good to go. Now I get the boat back from him this season and I splash it and sure enough the trim tab isn't working. I have a Bennett v351 and this time I filled up the fluid myself and while it was a little low it should have had enough ATF to do its work.

The starboard side tab works just fine with no problems but when I engage the port side tab the pump motor sounds like its having problems when I press the bow down button. Below is a video with audio of the pump in action, the third engagement you hear is my buddy pressing down the bow down button on the trim tab in question.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...6/IMG_3830.MOV

Any help would be greatly appreciated! I'd hate to go another season barking at my buddies to shift their weight on the boat to level out.

Hi I have a set of Bennett trim tabs on my 250 Amberjack. I am having trouble where the Starboard side will go up and down find but the Port side will just blow a fuse as soon as I press the button in either direction. I have previously had an issue with a “dry” electrical joint in the switch which resulted in the tab running down but not up and so the first thing that I did was to check all of the connections in the switch. I followed this up by unbolting the actuator from the tab just in case a stiff tabs was causing extra load on the motor. No luck here as the tabs moved freely but the fuse still blew on actuation.

I then pulled the solenoids out to see if there was any debris blocking the needle or seat but they were clean. The insulation had split on the Starboard side solenoid wiring but this is obviously not causing me any trouble as my problem is on the port side.

Finally, since I had the solenoids out I thought that I would reverse their installation (i.e. green back to the Port side and red to the Starboard) to see if the problem changed side. Unfortunately now the motor runs in both directions but nothing at all happens at the tabs.

Could you please suggest a possible cause and/or what the next point of trouble shooting I should apply is.
:smt100

Much Appreciated

Hello all.

Im a new boat owner so am still poking around to see what the best upgrade to make boating easier/more fun, and give me more information about the engines, and all others.

Then I ran across the tab auto controller. Question is: is it worth adding it? My trim gauge senders are bad. But someone said for my boat size (280), drive trim may not needed, only the tabs.

i also read a bit about the smart craft system and was wondering if the too can be linked? I might not know what I'm talking about. But you guys probably do :).

Suggestions on things to get and why please. :)

thank you

Hey everyone - I want to go with larger tabs than the stock 260 tabs. Currently, if my waste tank is full and I'm in a good cross breeze, I cant trim it out. I do NOT want to move the actuators - they are on a special pad on the transom and I couldn't move them further inboard without pulling the engine. Advisable or not, but is it possible to move to a larger tab with an offset actuator? I was thinking if I had someone weld on a brace along the edge to stiffen it, it may work?

Just cut wrap open (finally!) and was checking trim tabs when I noticed that one tab will not go down. One side goes up and down fine. On the other side, when I press button for tab to go down, motor does not activate. When I press up (even though tab is up already), motor runs.

I have been through the great troubleshooting posts and videos by TabMan. First plan is to pull switches and confirm lead for down on faulty tab is connected. Then plan to connect wire directly to hot and see if it works.

Other than that, any thoughts on troubleshooting? Would appreciate any feedback as soon as possible, hauler is coming on Saturday!!!!

First off thanks so much for this forum. I learned so much in only a few minutes about the problem I am having with my tabs.

My HPU has developed a leak in the rear of the unit. Based on the threads here it looks like the pump seal has given out. Given this might be original equipment on my 1997 boat that is pretty good life. Also from the threads I see that this is not really a user replacement type ordeal so I am looking at just purchasing a new HPU.

So my question is this. Will my 1997 HPU fit in the existing bracket mounted there. Does this unit just slide in or do I need to remove the bracket, then the unit? Or just un-tighten some screws and slide it out.

Also should I order new nuts for the fluid lines or can the original nuts be re-used. They don't seem to have any issues... Of course fro $5 for the nuts I may just play it safe.

Only want to jam myself back there in the transom behind the muffler once!

Thanks!!
