Anyone else dive in the Great Lakes? Would love to have some info on good dives.

I've done the wrecks off South Manitou Island in Lake Michigan off Leland. The wrecked freighter on the south part of the island is a nice very shallow dive. The wooden boat off the SE of the island wasn't so good for us. I don't think we'll go back.

I've also done Thunder Bay off Alpena in Lake Huron. The Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and Underwater Preserve. There are nearly a couple of dozen wrecks. The waves and wind determine which ones are good dives any given day. We did about 3 wrecks the day we went. I don't remember the names of the wrecks but it was nice diving. We'll go back there.

Anyone else have recommendations?

While the zebra mussels are a scourge on the Great Lakes, they have resulted in fantastic water clarity and great diving. In 60' of water off Bois Blanc Island in northern Lake Huron, we could clearly see bottom from the swimplatform.

Not sure if this is a ways for you but Tobermory is supposed to be nice.. Always a lot of diving activity when we are there.

Lots of info on the net... here's one site:

I have dove Tobermory once. It was some of the best diving that i have done in tghe Great Lakes, but keep in mind it is cold water diving. You'll need at least a 1/4" or 7mill wetsuit but a drysuit is the preferred eay to be comfortable. Just an FYI - make sure your regulator is set up for cold water diving so it doesnt free flow on you.

Enjoy

Sydison, thanks for the tip. Have dipped into cold water a few times. Alpena wasn't too warm, and Tahoe was colder.

Early next month I'll be experiencing the warmer side of things, diving in Belize.
