Official 320 Dancer Thread

Gents,

Looking for any ideas on why I've suddenly developed a whining from the starboard transmission.
It's a ZF 63 IV - 2.0
The weird thing is it only appears at idle and in forward. Increase the revs and it disappears and it doesn't happen in reverse.
The noise literally appeared over night - I dropped the boat off at the local marina to get the annual antifoul, Propspeed, etc. and when I collected it a couple of days later I heard the noise immediately as I motored away from the marina dock. I queried it with the guy who moved the boat to/from the slipway but he knew nothing about it. Sounds a bit suspect, I know, but I've known him for while and I do trust him so I doubt he has (or could!) have done anything catastrophic while moving the boat within the marina.

The boat was out of the water again recently and I had my mechanic check out the props/shafts/bearings and other than the starboard side having slightly more backlash than the port he couldn't see any issues.
The advice I'm getting ranges from "Keep an eye (ear?) on it" to "Just ignore it" , but it's driving me nuts and no doubt will be an issue when it comes time to sell. I want to know what it is and how to fix it!!

So . . . anyone had a similar problem or know anything about this ?

Thanks in advance,

Rob

Just like pain is telling your body something is wrong, so too do noises portend a problem. I would eliminate the "just ignore it" folks from my advice committee. Similarly keeping an eye on it is really just another way of saying cross your fingers and hope it goes away. One thing you could do (after checking for proper fill), would be to pull out some tranny fluid and send it off for analysis. That will tell you if there are any metal bits floating around in there which could indicate worn or damaged gears.

Could it be that something got misaligned and that is where your noise is coming from?

bobeast,
My thoughts exactly, hence the reachout to see if anyone has experience of this or has any ideas.
I've checked the oil - the level is fine, it's not discoloured and there's no obvious contaminants, but hadn't thought of getting it analysed. Good idea, thankyou - will follow that up.

WV320Dancer,
Not sure how this could happen - there's no damage to the prop or shaft to cause any misalignment and the engine/gearbox hasn't been moved.

Good Afternoon 320 peeps... well I finally got some pictures loaded onto my laptop for my upgrades.

What do you guys use as a water repellent on the plexiglass of your tops? Rainx for plastics? (heard mixed reviews)
Looking for suggestions!

I have always used McGuiars on my isinglass if that is what you are referring to?

Yes, thank you!
McGuiars is a cleaner and polish all in one. I have always had the best luck when I had a nice warm day and I could spread some towels out on the dock and clean both sides with the McGuiars and a good quality microfiber cloth. Isinglass is great stuff but it will scratch. I always store mine wrapped in sheets or bath towels rolled never folded.

320 Experts, I'm looking to upgrade my Raymarine TriData depth transducer and bring it in to my Garmin GPSMAP 740, can anyone tell me the size of the thru hull transducer? Also my parts manual shows if offset and ours is dead center in my 2003 320. Any transducer recommendations are welcome as well. I'll apologize in advance I tried searching the forum and it returned so many results I'd spend two days trying to filter through all of them.

I wonder if the PO has them stored somewhere. I’m gonna reach out to him.

If not do you know if they can be ordered any where?
I would be curious to see what you find to buy for that application. My 2004 320 didn’t come with curtains either.

The PO said he never had any either. (he was the 2nd owner).

Still searching for something to cover the portholes when need be.

I think I might have curtains for mine stored somewhere. We don’t use them. If I can find them, do you want the pattern?

That would be great if you don’t mind!

So the last leg of the trip is complete. Our new to us 320 is now in Charleston, WV. From Cartersville, GA through TN,KY and then into WV. Next steps are sand and redo the bottom paint, all the pre-spring maintenance. Then it will be my turn with the buffer to apply the complete Shurhold system.

So now I have a somewhat off the wall question. I just noticed that I am missing my shower curtain in the head. I am also missing the part that screws into the fiberglass (I want to call it the shower rod I guess). Does anyone have any suggestions? I have already checked Flounder Pounder.

Congrats on getting your new toy home. Did you have any problems getting it loaded due to the low lake levels?
Don't know about the shower rod, but I had to get a new curtain back years ago, and was able to order through Erwin Marine Sales in Chattanooga.

The boat had been out of the water as of December 27. I had it moved to a canvas shop in Cartersville. Got my canvas and floor done. Then we moved it home. But yes even on the 27th the water levels in Alltoona were very low.
