Hello,
I want to replace the windlass on my 1991 Sundancer 350. What are the things I should take into consideration when looking for a replacement. I'd like to be able to use the same wiring and switches at the helm.

Thanks,

Tom

I had the same boat and absolutely loved it! Do you have a Good windlass? The manufacturer will refurbish it at the factory and ship it back along with new color coded anchor rode at a reasonable cost.

Good Windlass is the best application for your boat. The PO replaced the solenoids, but other than that, all is good. Their service is excellent

I forgot to ask: what's wrong with the Windlass that is there now?

Thanks all - yes, it's a Good windlass. Seems to have lost its umph - won't pay-out line without tugging on it, and won't retrieve line. Tried replacing the line with no improvement. I'd also like a windlass that can handle rope and chain. I did get a refurbishment quote from Good for about $900. If I'm going to pay that much, I want to see what options there are for a new rope/chain one.

Rebuild mine in 2017- split cleaned and greased. Works great.

Just cleaned and greased it?

Rusted Nut do you think it is possible to take it apart without removing it from the boat? I believe years ago I took one apart while on the boat for my brother after the rode jammed up inside of it. What about any gaskets? I think this may be a spring project as I just spliced up a new rode for the windlass and I might as well clean up the windlass internals too.

Thanks QT1 - I'm not really too concerned which model we're talking about - I know Lewmar makes higher capacity windlasses. I'm more interested in knowing if I'll still be able to use the switches that I now have at the helm or if a new windlass will also require a rewire. Any idea?

My guess is to try this: find the model you want, download the schematic and compare it to what is already in place. The Good windlass file I have is too large to upload here. If interested I can email it to you.
The only thing good about a re-wire if you had to go that way is you already have something in place to work with verses starting from scratch, which is what I would have had to do with the V700 on my 300 Weekender.

Thanks QT. Can you email to

Thanks so much!!!

Good winless has a chain/rode model that will adapt to the current model you have. adapter plate to mount and new helm switches that are plug and play. They quoted me $1600 with the old model trade with new color coded 200 ft. rode and 10 foot of chain. I will be replacing mine next month but I am going with 20 foot of chain

Just fixed mine replaced the motor and the solenoids and circuit breaker. Works fine now.
