I’ve purchased several used boats over the years but this is first time buying new. We’ve priced out ordering a new Sea Ray as we want it and the “As Configured” price is in the low $70K’s.

Not knowing or understanding how Sea Ray and their dealer system works I’m curious what I should expect when working with the dealer. Is this a no hassle pricing system or should I expect some reasonable % off this number?

I am ordering and not buying off their inventory so I’m not sure if this changes things.

I would appreciate some insight on how this process works.
 
I'm not a broker but I've had some experience buying new boats from SR and MM. Members here have negotiated up to 40% off the MSRP/as configured pricing. I have gotten as much as 36% off MSRP on my 300DA. That boat was already on the dealers lot and it was getting towards the end of the season. I also negotiated 26% off a special ordered 260DA. That said, there is a much higher mark up in the larger boats, especially when you start adding options. The entry level boats like the SPX will not have nearly the mark up of the larger ones. Much less wriggle room as far as pricing goes. This is particularly true since you are special ordering yours and not buying one which is sitting on a dealers lot (which they are paying SR for) I got about 12% off my special ordered 19SPX. So...I just configured a 230 SPX OB with an upgraded engine and a bunch of popular options that I would choose and I came up with a MSRP of 73K. There is about a 10K mark up in that. Now the salesman gets a commission and the dealer gets their share, and the dealer prep, delivery etc. I would say if you could get 5K of that 10K off, then that's a decent place to start. But whatever you do, don't pay the "as configured" or "MSRP" pricing. Oh and welcome to CSR and good luck with the new boat!
 
Thanks for the info and I'm also looking at the SPX 230 OB. For our needs (mostly cruising inland lakes in Midwest) I think I can get away with the 150HP. I would like the 200HP option with assist and FBW throttle but $10K more to move up 50HP is a hard sell.

So far our boat is pricing out at about $71K MSRP with the 150HP option and our dealer is offering about 12.5% or $9K off this price. So far it sounds like I'm in the ballpark.

PS: How are you getting a number of $73K with the 200HP option? Are you ordering without a trailer?
 
I use the build your SR on SR's site as well as the see dealer costs website. https://seedealercost.com/marine/ I also spend way too much time online looking. ;) How did they get you a price of 71K without the upgraded engine? Are you doing the elevation package?

I have the 150 outboard on my 19SPX. That would "probably" be just ok for the 210SPX as well, but if I was getting the 230SPX OB...it would have to be the 200 or 250 OB.
 
No elevation package, tower or additional electronics but we are adding most of the other options as well as the galvanized trailer. I'm going to try and see if the dealer can do any better on the 200HP motor but our lake has a maximum 40 MPH limit which is pretty well enforced so top speed is not high on my list.

The extra power will be more beneficial getting on plane, not necessarily for top speed.

I’d highly recommend that you get 5-6 people together for a test ride in a similarly powered model boat (I realize yours is a custom order) and go for a ride.

You may find the 150 perfectly adequate or you may realize that you need the 200.

I stumbled across the seedealercost site yesterday which was helpful however it appears your price for the trailer seems off. I don't see a trailer on the SR site for $1,902?
 
Unfortunately there are not any 23' O/B boats available in my area. Most of what is ordered here by dealers are still I/O's. They have one SPX 210 with the 200HP but it's sold pending closing so we are not able to demo it.

I agree 100%.

@Namakan, You mentioned the 40 mph speed limit so I assume you will be boating on Minnetonka? Unless you go out on the lake mid-week during the day, you will rarely have an opportunity to go 40 mph but that's beside the point.

The reason for the larger motor is threefold, 1) to get on plane efficiently, 2) comfort for you and your guests (the boat will be a dog with 4+ normal sized adults), and 3) resale value. You need to consider the fact you may want, or need, to sell in the future and an underpowered boat is not going to sell well.

Finally, consider a late model used boat. You will save a ton of money by letting someone else take the hit on depreciation.

Thanks for the input and yes on Tonka. I grew up here and drove charter boats all through college so I've seen just about everything on this lake. Too bad how busy it's become on weekends and we tend to do more during the week and stick to the west end on weekends. I've been looking at used boats and really have not found anything that trips my trigger unfortunately.

I really prefer to have something with an outboard, good seating and a bathroom for my family of girls which makes the search harder. My intentions are to keep this boat for at least 15-20 years if not longer so going new and getting exactly what I want is enticing.
 
I did look at it and it fits most of items on the hit list but I really like the layout of the 230 much better, especially the deletion of the passenger bucket seat and the added sun pad/seat in the aft. The pickiness in me also wants to avoid another black hull which I’ve had before.

Talked to dealer today and the Merc 175 is also an option that was not online and is a much more reasonable price increase verses the 200.

Makes sense. See if they have anything close to that power that you can test drive and compare. As mentioned above, nobody ever complained about too much HP.

Ends up that the 175 is no longer an option but my dealer did a very nice gesture by cutting the cost to go up to the 200 in light of the misinformation from SR.

Really looking forward to delivery. Hopefully summer will finally arrive in Minnesota by mid July.
