I have been turning on the A/C by just using the circuit breaker. However, I have been told this may not be the best way to turn on the unit; that first the circuit breaker should be turned on, and then the A/C should be turned on at the control panel. Of course, this would require the A/C to be turned off at the control panel after each use. Naturally I like my procedure better because it only requires one switch to be turned on. Does it make any difference how it's turned on?

I have always turned mine on and off at the breaker.

I'm not even sure I'd know how to turn it off at the t-stat :) I've always used the breaker...

I guess ideally everything should be turned off at their specific control , then breaker be turned off. IDk anyone that does... Hell im an ac guy and I just turn the breaker off.

I shut mine down at the control first, then breaker. It's the same way I shut down lights, TV, radio, etc. It's also how I shut down shore power....the items themselves, breakers, lazerette switches, shore power pedestal. I can't help it, it must be done that way.:)

At the breaker....it doesn’t matter, something has to be energized last. The ac unit electric system itself ensures a controlled start but even then the in rush current is where the real exposure lies

Thanks for all the inputs - I'll use the breaker as I have done in the past.

My boat is fairly modern, the temp control of the AC units include an "on/off" switch.

Now that I think about, so does everything else electrical.

I always shut all my electronics off at the unit then the breaker last. Dont want to take a chance of any surge blowing a display or control of any unit when I flip the breaker.

Here's a twist. I have a relay bridging the breaker and the relay is controlled by a BoatCommand so I can turn it on before I leave for the boat.

I suppose technically, that's turning it on by the breaker. I just couldn't resist the humble brag :)
