Oil Change Cost?

Anyways, when we left I was to go to Costco and pick up another case of 3 gallons of Delo 400 oil so I'd have some extra on board. I'll drop it off at his shop and he'll top off both engines and leave the rest on board.

I told him I'd bring it by today then I said "I'll settle up with you then."

His comment was "Well, we'll see about that. Or not."

So before I drop off the oil I'll go by this Mexican store that does a great lunch package for about 6 people and get them lunch. I do that about every three months just to let his crew know I appreciate them. It's kind of a "Golden Rule" thing. I like to treat them all as friends, not just as employees/workers.

Final tally--I took the guys in the repair shop lunch from the Mexican place ($20) and a 24 pack of Pepsi ($12). I sat with Jim and his son Travis and had a great chat about everything from the Democratic debate (which just about everyone agrees was a disaster with the only winners being #1 Trump and #2 Bernie) to the Bugaloo movement to fixing boats, etc. We covered all topics at least once.

At the end I gave him the 3 gallons of oil I'd picked up, he gave me my empty oil disposal jugs, and we parted. He would not take any money for doing the oil change.

Mick, I've done this for years. If I'm not bringing them a dozen donuts I'm bringing them lunch or chicken nuggets. About once or twice a month I swing by and drop off a little gift. If Jim's busy I just drop them and run. If he's got time we'll sit and chat about whatever's going on.

As I said early on, he's as much a friend as he is my boat fixer upper guy.

I would echo what everyone else has offered. Also its the best way to learn about your boat. The more time in the engine room the more confidence you will have moving forward. As with any new boat take maintenance statements wth a grain of salt. Not sure if you have outdrives or not if so check bellows and water pump impellers sooner rather than later. also depending on condition exhaust manifolds are wear items and can be expensive if left unchecked for too long. Freshwater they last approx 8ish years..salt 3 ish and this is just a guideline. Poke around the motors and check them before start after start and after shutdown ..looking for leaks, odors...burningbetc. also check belts and keep an extra.
 
I agree.. I ordered a mightyvac to do the oil extraction, got the filters, now im shopping the oil. Amazon has the 25/40 Quicksilver synthetic for 33 a gal. Once I have all the parts, I am going to knock it out. Pending I don't have the Covid.. : )

That’s the one I used on my 340’s 8.1’s. Worth the money. There is a cheaper model that looks similar, but has a diaphragm pump rather than an impeller - don’t waste your money on it...

I have a Reverso now for everything on the 58, but I still use it on the waverunnner. Going strong 13 years after I bought it...

Check Wal-Mart for that oil. I’ve seen it there a few times for cheaper than that. Their stock is usually inconsistent around here but I’ve been able to order oil on their website for in store pickup.
