My 1985 Monaco (230hp Mercruiser Alpha One Sterndrive) started up no problem after 7 months of winter, but it will not start back up once turned off when the engine is hot (It requires me to sit for 30 min - 1hr before starting again). The boat does seem to be running hot as well based on the gauges and the exhaust being hot to touch. I am going to take the boat to the marina but wanted to suggest some areas to look at in order to save a few bucks...

Does anyone know what the issue could be? (Had the impeller and thermostat replaced last year)

So running hot before those 2 things ? That's an old motor, how old are the 2 pumps ? raw water and circulating . Hosing from out-drive to exhaust ? Blockage?
Water in, water out.

Yes it was running hot before them.

I'm not too sure about the pump age but the it's the original boat engine and only has 600 hours on it.

your carb`d so doubtful its vapor lock .How old are the manifolds and elbows?
Verify the temps with a laser and correct the overheat condition
Raw water temps should be no more than 165

All I can say is if you did not get all the pieces of impeller out back in your hand when changed. They are more then likely clogged in oil coolers if equipped with them on you boat if not they are somewhere in system restricting the water flow. Had a hell of time chasing

Wow, that's a lot of rubber. The marina did in fact provide me with the impeller back and it was intact although cracks were showing.

The manifolds and elbows are almost certainly original. I'm doubtful my grandfather ever did anything major to the boat.

But again, the boat only has 600 hours and has only ever been in freshwater.

I'm not sure how I could determine if it's working correctly or not. Any suggestions?

Take the thermostat out and put it in boiling hot water. You should see it operate if it is any good. The thermostat should have the temperature rating on it. Check to see if it is the correct temperature rating for your engine. Replace the thermostat correctlly with a good gasget.

Going to do this. Thanks.

I called my local marina and they suggested that it could be something called a 'hot soak'. They said it is possible that the carb is getting flooded with fuel and that's what could be causing it to not start back up after it's warm. Any thoughts?
