My son is looking to buy a boat in RI.
We live in Maryland.
I've never done a long distance purchase.

Can anyone provide advice on finding a surveyor?
Engine mechanic?
Should I find a broker to represent my son, or just work with the selling broker?

TIA,

Rob

I used James Hilton at EBCS Marine Survey, He was very professional and seemed well versed in all aspects of the boat, engines, and electronics. I was also impressed when he showed up for the survey with all of the factory specs from Sea Ray and Cummins in hand, the survey report was several pages long and included tons of pictures to document everything. 401-864-7161

I have not ever used a broker, I rely on the survey. If you use James, the survey includes the current value of the boat. Armed with the current value and a list of needed service and repairs your Son should be able to negotiate and buy the boat at the right price. If you don't use James I recommend using a surveyor that includes the value of the boat not just the condition of it.

Are you looking for a gas or diesel mechanic?

Thank you for the great information and advice!
We've decided to pass on this particular opportunity so we don't need a mechanic.

My thoughts on having a broker was to ensure all the documentation was correct, particularly since we would've been working from out-of-state. I was concerned that the selling broker might not have had our interests as his priority.

Thanks again!
