I decided to check the shower sump pump today to make sure it's working as we're taking a week long trip starting next weekend.
The sump was full, so I pulled the pump and checked for power, had 13 volts.
I messed around with the float and it started working....... backwards.
It comes on when the float is in the down, or sump empty position, goes off with the float in the up position. I ordered a new one, but i thought that is weird.
Maybe I'm missing something.

Great idea, I'm on the boat right now so I tried that. No go though. I'm thinking this has been this way since it was installed. I can tell it's not the original.
Thanks for the suggestion.

The pump pumps correctly, the float is backwards. Turns on at empty, off at full basically.

Wrong float? The internal contacts should be mormally open when sitting on the bottom which would close when in the raised position. Can you turn your float over?
Nothing comes apart except for the piece over the impeller. I know it's the wrong configuration, turning on when it's empty, and off when it has water. The new one will be here Tuesday, at least it's easy to get to.

The float actually doesn't care which way it is connected. Basically, the float is a simple switch - it's like touching two wires together or pulling them apart. While typically installed on the positive lead, it could be installed on the negative lead and still function as it's sole purpose is to simply make or break. If the wires "upstream" were backwards, the fuse would blow. Besides, I think you've had the boat long enough where you would have noticed an overflow issue before?

I've never seen a float fail like that, but I suppose anything is possible! Definitely an odd on odd one you got there, Wyr! Good thinking to check things out - prevention is KEY!

While you are at it check the thru hull. You can see it under the front sink after you remove the rear cover. Mine was cracked and dripping.

I was going to upload a short video but can't here, and can't figure Shutterfly out.
Damned Photobucket.

I got the new pump today, it works the correct way.

It's an all on one pump/float.
