Official 280 Sundancer Thread

Does anyone know the size of our portlights and where I might be able to get replacement gaskets for them? After tropical storm Isaias I found I have a leak in one of them.

Also, on a related note, any thoughts on replacing the sliding door behind the sink and stove? It looks like the leak hit that and caused it to swell and disintegrate. Almost looks like cardboard after it got wet. :(
Were you taking about the rubber gasket between the plexiglass and the frame or the frame to the hull? If you meant frame to hull see my last post. If you meant the rubber gasket between the plexi and frame then let me know if you source them. I have one that’s a little rough.

With all of this extra time on my hands I find myself thinking about improvements to the boat.
Has anyone ever modified the dinette on the 280 to make it more a seating area, rather than dining/sleeping. It is just my wife and I, and cannot see needing the berth. What I am toying with is a bench filling the gap between the existing benches, and having cushions made that give back support, and soften the corner as it goes between the existing seating. Has anyone done this?

Does anyone know the Sunbrella color that's on my boat? I need to do a patch job to last the rest of the season.

I'm
It’s still available, it’s the fabric we had our Bimini sunshade made from last year.
I'm not sure I have tweed. I understand you can see black fibers in the tweed color. I really don't see any black. Looks like solid to me. What do you think?

Can’t really tell from the photo. I tried comparing your picture with the actual Bimini and it just didn’t work. I did look up the quote for our Bimini and the fabric was Sunbrellar Heather Beige. There is no black in ours either. It is the same fabric that was used for our exterior upholstery.

Looks like I have sprung an oil leak in our 2001. It’s driving me crazy because it’s enough to make a mess in the bilge but not enough to show a noticeable difference in fluid levels and can be one of 3 things. However I do think I have narrowed it down to the remote oil filter. Oil is pooling on top of the port motor mount next to the trim reservoir directly under the remote oil filter lines. I was poking around today and there is definitely residual oil on the lines below the oil filter. Before I drop $200 on a new set of oil lines I’m going to bring a wrench with me next time we go out and see if they are loose under the filter adaptor. Is this a common issue?

Both of mine had seepage. Enough to goo up the lines. After draining the oil, I took the fittings loose, cleaned the threads real good, applied thread sealing compound, and put the lines back on. No seepage this year. Hope it holds up.

I just replaced both oil lines on mine. The first replacment had a leak from the factory in one of the two hoses. Temporarily, I repaired the old hose, using hose clamps and high temp/high pressure hose. That didn't leak, although I wouldn't use it for long term use. The next replacement hose is also leaking slightly. Not as bad as the first replacement, so I'll keep an eye on it. Not enough to cause any real oil loss, but not what you expect from a hose directly from Merc. Looks like the quality control on these hoses are out the window!

Had a strange issue the other day. Was cruising along happily at 28 mph when I got two beeps and the starboard engine RPM dropped jerking the boat to the side. It quickly recovered then did it again about 5 minutes later. The rest of the day I had no issues. Last night as I was going up to plane it beeped twice again and same thing. Very quickly recovered then no issue the rest of the day. I did some searching and it sounds like possible the engine pressure sensor flaking out. Does this sound right? Can anyone give me a part number and location of the sensor?

Are there any paper tags left on any of the bimini pieces, everything you want to know would be on them if it's original.

I mean between the plexi and frame. Haven't found it yet. :(

No, any tag is probably long gone. Just the usual Sunbrella tag. I just emailed Sea Ray with my hull number, on the outside chance they might be able to look up the original order. Probably not, but worth a try.

Maybe Greatlakesboattop.com can help you identify the canvas. The odds are good they were the OEM. I ordered canvas from them for my 280DA, perfect fit and they're real helpful over the phone. When I look at their site it shows two possible matches for your '03 280DA, toast tweed and linen tweed.

So my dog decided to try and break out of the cabin and tear up a section of the vinyl on the backside of the cabin door. It's bad enough where I can't temporarily just put clear tape over it. It's roughly a 1ft by 6in section that I need to repair. Any suggestions on how to fix it. I thought about temporarily trying to find some close matching tape until I have time to figure out how to replace that entire backside of the door. I'm assuming it'll be a bigger project that would be better for the off season.

So I have a 2001 280 Sundancer that the original owner ordered with no radar arch because of low bridge clearance issues. Of course they are not something the dealers can get from Searay anymore. Anyone out there know of a salvaged 280 that I could try to get one from?

Try a local vinyl repair (mobile) shop. Ask around at auto dealerships or try a franchise like Dr. Vinyl.
