Attached are two photos of the OEM VHF handset on my 2005 42 Sundancer. As you can see, the cord is frayed badly. I cannot lay my hands on the manuals and I don't see a model number on the handset anywhere. Is the cord replaceable or do I have to replace the whole handset? If full replacement is my only option, does anyone know what model this is? Many thanks! IMG_20201108_152051.jpg PXL_20201123_194115075.jpg

Looks pretty shot and you’re not likely to find a replacement handset for a 15 year old radio. Best option is to pick out a while new radio that you like.

if you want a black box style, Icom M400BB is good as well as the Garmin VHF 315.

Sent mine back to Raymarine. They fixed it.

I took mine to a local marine electronics place and they were able to source the cord and replaced it, worked like a champ

If the vhf has the DSC function, then see if it can be repaired economically. If it does not, an upgrade would be in order. Besides the automated distress call function, a DSC capable vhf gives you a device to register for a MMSI number. That is necessary if you want to add an AIS transceiver in the future. Oh and a new vhf can also give you AIS receive only! AIS is a huge safety advantage if you boat around commercial traffic, or are subject to low visibility conditions (fog) on a regular basis.

My cord was repaired by the previous owner.I believe he dipped it in a plastic coating holding up well.

It's a Ray230. I replaced my frayed cord years ago but heard it's getting harder to find them now. The cord is starting to go again so I'm replacing it with an Icom M400BB as Brad suggested.

It is a Ray230 - we have one too with the same problem. I contacted Raymarine last year about sending it back for a new cord but there were none to be had! I did a comprehensive search but couldn't find any. I want to update the electronics and a radio that connects to N2K is part of that puzzle - will be installing the new Standard Horizon GX2400. It includes the AIS receiver and is more reasonably priced than the black-box models.

I was lucky to have no previous owner electronics and went with a lightly used SH GX5500s with a VH310 remote handset below deck also works as an intercom. And a remote speaker a bull horn on the bow under the spotlight. It has DSC with NEMA-0183 input from GPS.

This seems to be almost the same functional design as the Ray230.
Do 420/460s have a cabin handset for intercom? Is the unit currently wired to a working GPS? Currently wired to an external speaker and/or hailer?

If yes then I can see why wanting to replace the cord is worthwhile even if new units are readily available. You would need to update multiple components and/or wiring.

How many conductors are in the cable? (how many little wires)
