Marina Renting Your Slip to Transients

It's in my contract also. I leave a set of lines for my boat on the pilings and cleats. I came back from two weeks in the Abaco and my lines were replaced with some shoddy undersize and unacceptable lines. As it ends up they allowed someone to use my slip and my expensive lines were replaced..... Marina made good on it but that will be the last time I notify them even though a violation to the contract...

Just buy a couple of these, attach some fishing line and a weight to them and leave them in your slip while you are gone. https://www.amazon.com/BigMouth-Inc-Floater-Floating-Hilarious/dp/B00GSVQDPG

ONE MORE STUNT LIKE THAT MAVERICK AND YOU'LL BE FLYING RUBBER DOG SHIT OUT OF HONG KONG!!!

Not in my contract, but our marina has a sizable guest dock. Just doesn't seem right to me. I have an extra set of dock lines and power cord that stay at the slip and are specifically tuned to my boat. Not to mentioned the dock box, hose reel, etc.

That's almost like your landlord reserving the right to allow someone to stay in your house when you go on vacation.

Personally I always felt is should be a partnership between the slip holder and the marina. If I rent for the entire year/season then they should give me the option to list and sublet my slip while I am away. The marina would then act as dockmaster and collect the fees, check insurance and apply a credit of a predetermined percentage to my account. This works for both parties involved.

Marina says - "we do this to keep monthly rates down"

Yea..... right. The County would never pass the income on to the slip holder and electric? There’s a snowballs chance in Hell

We have the same language in our rules but ours state 3 days. We ate a Boat Club not a business so a little different.

Chesapeake - very common at Fairlee, Kent Narrows, Annapolis marinas. In the contract. I was a weekend transient at Great Oak Landing a while back, slip holder came back early on a Sunday but I had paid thru 6pm. Got ugly tween him and dockmaster. Long ago, but I think we worked it out so all were happy. But no, I wouldn’t stay at Marina with that policy. But then I don’t stay at fancy marina. It’s a boatyard with a lot of derelict wrecks on land, lots of old-salt grizzly captains, cheap rates, no amenities, and I love it! Side note - Great Oak Yacht Club at Fairlee creek. GYOC = Get Out Your Cash! Can I get a witness!

This place will be our home for our new (old) boat. Party time. But cannot disagree with you.

I am sure they think this and I don't expect them to do it however I feel it is short sighted from a business/marketing perspective.

I am in a county marina and we are just a revenue source for the general fund. It's always an issue to request and get repairs done. There is hardly any money spent for maintenance. So, yes not much of a chance of it getting passed back. Outside of that the marina and park are a wonderful place.

Can you imagine stealing another boaters lines... unbelievable. The marina probably lost money on the transient fee replacing the lines

Yea, to the sum of about $360 to replace all six lines. The marina was good about it; they have had my back several times, no complaints.

Here in Benicia, if you are gone they will rent your slip to overnighters but credit your slip account ten bucks a night for the nights its occupied.
Carpe Diem

At our marina, they have a note that asks for you to notify them if you'll be gone for more than 2 nights. They don't want to deal with folks that go away for a day or two on the weekend, but if you're out for an extended period, they might use it for a transient. That's usually only when they have a group coming and they will come and ask you. For example, we had a Ranger Tug cruising club come thru the marina, and they wanted a bunch of slips, so the marina manager checked in with the folks on the docks that were the right length for the incoming boats.

Although I am not crazy about having someone else in the slip, with my lines and fenders along the finger pier, I also understand that I've been that guy in a transient slot at a lot of other people's slips over the years. I try to be like a good boy scout and leave my campsite better than I found it.

Thanks for the replies and info, everyone.

rent a space for the six months of boating season, which in my case would be over $1,000 per month not including electric.

Holy OMG Batman! I pay $125 a month. Less all year than y’all 2 months. Wow. God bless ya, don’t quit your day job.

I am beginning to understand why we see so many people from PA,NJ, even NY at the marina. Met a couple this summer who drive 3 hours one way to their boat on my pier.
I drive 3-1/2..... what else you going to do when you live in the middle of Indiana
