I am asking the CSR moderators to consider making CSR a less hostile forum by considering being more strict in enforcing your policy of civility.

I used to come to CSR to share my love of boating and the outdoors with fellow boaters. To read about and share maintenance and repair ideas and tips with other boaters. It was always fun and uplifting.

The past year has been incredibly stressful on the world. A very divisive election in the US, this pandemic. And because CSR is a place where people of differing political views gather to talk about the boating lifestyle they share, its no surprise that this became a place to vent. But that is not what CSR is about.

I am not talking about banning people with strong views. (God forbid that, because I would be out). But I am talking about not tolerating hostile posts and threads. And deleting threads that go that way.

I also don't think CSR should allow any political threads. There is no need for CSR to turn into a political protest platform - for me or for anyone. There are lots of places to go on line and vent about political issues that have a broader audience. That is not why we gather at CSR.

I always respect other people's views and their right to have them. Face to face, sitting on the dock at our marina, I would never get into a political argument with one of my friends. And we all have different political and other views. On-line forums are different though. We say things you would never say to the guy to the guy in chair next to you that you just handed a cold beer to.

Virtually everyone on this forum if we ran into each other out in a cove somewhere and realized "Hey, you are XXX from CSR?" we would say "Good to meet you. Come on over for a drink.".

So lets give ourselves CSR as a place to meet with friends, like we are sitting in dock chair having a few drinks.

I moderate an Outdoors Forum with over 73K members and ended up with a no political post policy. Members that were basically like-minded in a normal setting turned on each other in a blood bath.

Even after 3 months of this "some" still rock the boat at any given chance to sell their wares. Several members were given a vacation, but the damage was done. That Forum has been in existence for over 20 years with several elections, but this one has driven a wedge into the membership like nothing we've ever seen.

About 5 years ago we opened a political sub-section within where members could bash each other's brains in and it got way out of hand.

The healing has started, but the damage was done...

Isn't that the tiki bar section? Or are you talking about political stuff popping up in regular topics?

I don't find this site to be overly political but maybe I just happened to miss those posts.

It's funny you mention that -- I am having a sign made for the cockpit that says

HOUSE RULES
1. No politics

Only because we're out to have good time so let's talk about something else. Most of politics is designed to drive a wedge between us and get us fighting amongst ourselves anyway, like bread and circus.

No, unless it changed in the last couple months. The holding tank is supposed to be for political posts. Then They stay out of the new post feed. Some members refuse to follow the rule, or just won’t read the rules....

Agreed!
However hard to do when you have this many members .
It would be nice if those with political views would keep it to just the holding tank but two things keep that from happening .
1> No fame in the holding tank.
2> The holding tank is at the bottom of the site. No one scrolls down that far to post an opinion or to read it. To my point of >1

I just choose to not to read post from the dozen or so members that love to cause friction but it has gotten a bit much over the last 6 months.

Oh stop yourself. Have some self discipline and don’t read posts that don’t interest you or offend you. Enough of the wussification of the inter web.
See, this is exactly the civility I am talking about. Wussification? Come on.

Silence! Your opinions offend me. The web has become the town square where differing opinions should be discussed and welcomed, not silenced. Not everyone on this site believes in the freedom of speech; however, some of us have fought and bled for it and will continue to do so. You don't like the topic? Move on. You don't like someone's opinion and do not care to read what they say any longer? Use the commie button that says, "Ignore." Feel free to use it on me.

Don't fall victim to cancel culture. You are not going to make this a perfect world.... Look at what I just went thru and it was boating related :)

Uh oh. What did you just go through? Must have missed something...

It takes me on average just a few minutes to scan down "New Post" and read threads that have a topic of interest. And that's probably less than 5% of what's offered here. After that, I hit "Mark All Forums Read" and move on.

I have a few members blocked due to their obnoxious behavior as well.

So I use the method "If you don't like it, don't read it and don't participate" and move on.

Freedom of choice is a good thing. Overly moderated forums tend to push people away. And this appears to be one of the better run forums.

My vote is to leave it alone and leave it up to the individual.

That is what prompted me. That thread went sideways fast.

I’m sick of the let’s silence them or delete them or put them on a vacation this is the USA people died so we could speak our minds and guess what we don’t all think alike so what, don’t read the damn thread and move on. I don’t have Facebook, Instagram etc this is my only social media and I for one am glad there are a few threads other than boating. We discuss pets ,family, shopping let’s shut those conversations down also. I try not to get involved with the political threads too much but I am damn sure against silencing anyone.

I realize this is a privately owned forum and Jim can make the rules but if the decision is made to silence others that’s my que for stage right I’m out I will pull my membership I don’t agree with Cancel culture.

Ya, the Cancel Culture, all the moralizing they do...they'll send Pepe Le Pew into exile but think black chick porn during prime time Grammys while kids might be watching is art at the edge and oh so awesome.
