Polk Audio Speakers

I ran new wire - 14 Ga Monster Cable, and double for the subs (2 10" JL Audio w/350 watt amp). I did notice a difference when I doubled the wiring for the subs. I couldn't find anything bigger, so I ran two lines the exact same length.

Yeah, I do bi-wire on my home theater stuff. Good way to go. From my experience working at circuit city for a few years back in highschool/college, I don't think that monster cable is that big a deal anymore, but I do like it still. As long as it's cheap off ebay :)

In my 39Express I’m installing in the outside area 12- DB 651’s, 2-12’’ DB 1240DVC subs powered by 2- 500.4 and 1-PA 1200.1 amps. All are Polk audio componets.
I am also looking to change the rest of the system and could use some suggestions on what is out there now that would be a real good unit to match with the other components.
Other than the speakers the other componets are down in the cabin.

I got the DB6501 and DB651's for Christmas. I also got a new Sony CDX-M50IP head unit, a Sony XM-604 AMP, and a 10" Sony Sub, and the Sony RM-X55M wired remote.

It took me 2 weekends to complete..here is what I did!!!

I made a mount from a cutting board and installed the AMP in the cabin below the stereo. I cut a 10" hole for the sub under the port lounge seat (scary!) I found a breaker for the circuit panel and ran the remote wire for the amp to that, so I can kill power to the amp to save battery if needed. I installed the tweeters at the helm and one by the cup holder on the port side. I mounted the crossovers for the tweeters in the cabin storage next to the microwave.

The wired remote is at the helm. My speedometer does not work (I use my GPS) so I removed it and the remote fits perfectly without cutting.

Now I know that Sony may not be the best, but I was very impressed with the over all sound. I choose the Sony sub because it was open air and I did not need to make a box.

I was very suprised at how clean and hard hitting the amp/sub combo was. The only thing I have on the amp is the sub and I have it bridged. The head unit is plenty of power for the speakers.

Very happy and looking forward to May 1st when she goes into the water for the year.

Hmm, well I could buy one pair of these or I could get 6 pair of Polk's....

Depends on what you like, what you can afford, and if high end is what you like. I think you will survive with the polks.

I put together a car boat stereo sound off. The cars were in their category and the boats in theirs. The judging was done by IASCA and there were a lot of entries from both sides. Systems such as Bose, Clarion, etc were even there. Surprise here was Polk Audio won in the boat competition for clarity and good clean sound through out the ranges. I believe I will go with the professional judges and their choice. I was not concerned as to what the speakers would cost all I wanted was good clean sound. So big money does not always equate to better sound.

This is the web site for IASCA the ones that did the judging.

Do you know what series in particular? Now that I think JL's are out of the picture for me due to price, I am trying to decide between the DB and Momo's. Sounds like the install problems with MoMo's might be reason enough to just go with DB's though, haha.

I just installed 4 db651 speakers. I can't believe how good they sound.:wow: The new Sony headunit is WAY better than the Kenwood I had prior. I even put the foam baffles in with the speakers.

Next year is the amp and sub...

What do the foam baffles do?

Good to hear that the db651's sound great. Looking forward to setting this all up!

Yes it made a difference. The sound is more crisp and the bass is cleaner. I have no amp or sub as of yet.

In the package with the db651's there are plastic rings with multiple ears for mounting. I snapped off all ears. In the existing cut-out, I placed the baffle and then the plastic ring. Secured it will 6 screws. Then mount the speaker with the foam ring and grill.

Yes, trim the exposed foam from the baffle.

Mark...do you recall which baffles you used? I have the db651 (not the shallow mount). Looks like there are 2 depths(for the 6 1/2") - 2 3/8" and 3 1/4".

Thanks for the input.

And one more thing on this...

How do you guys think these compare to Wet Sounds 6.5? A buddy of mine can get them for not too much more than the polk db651's.

Any way of knowing which I will need ?

If you have the room, the 3-1/4" I guess will work for whatever speaker you decide on. Unless you get the shallow mounts, then you will need the shallow baffles.
