268DA and Weekenders

Agreed, I installed larger tabs and what a difference!!! Next step is adding the Bennett Auto Trim Tabs.

Had the same problem with my 454 powered 268 and the admiral didn't like the ride at 24mph in rough seas, nor did she like wallowing around off plane which was even more uncomfortable! I decided to remove the rather small trim tabs and put the largest width and deepest tabs without changing the position of the ram (can't recall the size now) and WOW - what an improvement!!
I recall being able to plane at 18mph which allowed a much more comfortable ride, especially with a lot of cross chop. This would allow the bow to cut into waves with more of a pushing feel than a slapping or "wham" action that was definitely NOT healthy for anything attached to the inside of the hull.

It also helped the boat be more stable on calmer days on plane. With a little tab deployed along with the drive up it seemed to plant the stern firmer in the water. Before this the boat always seemed tippy on plane, like it was balancing on the head of a pin. Any wind or shifting of passengers would set it on one side or the other. Definitely better with the larger tabs!

I bought my 268 with one of the engines and both outdrives removed. The Alpha's had already been rebuilt. The 170 had water in the oil.
I decided to pull the 2nd engine and had them both rebuilt.
Taking advantage of the room to clean and update everything in the engine compartment.
Have a couple of questions someone may be able to help with. The A.C. water pump was already removed. Where does it mount back to?
And the Onan 3k only has 165 hours on it, but does not have a belt and I think the pulley looks crooked, so going to pull it.
What size can I replace it with or can I get it refreshed?
The boat is in great shape, was well maintained. The engines had 1350 hours on them.
Thanks!!

Take a look at my Photo Album under my profile, you can see the A/C Pump was located on the Port Side just forward of the engine.

Are you asking about putting in a new generator? Be prepared to spend $7000.00 +...

This is the only other Genny I have found that will fit down in that cramped space.

It would be a heck of a lot quieter than that old Onan 3.0 MAJB, which is what I have

Pics, and your thoughts on the performance details would be much appreciated.

Sorry this took so long BBY. Got her on the trailer and able to get a pic of the dirty trim tabs.

Welded 6" extensions on the existing trim tabs. Was worried they may flex, so I also added some gussets for support.

The boat is more responsive to small adjustments to the tabs so I definitely feel a slight difference for the better. It took a little of the side-to-side motion away when fishing the "ditch" in heavy seas, however, she still heaves side-to-side pretty bad which is the only thing I dislike about the long, narrow beam, deep cut "V" Sea Rays.

The addition was worth while as it really did not cost me anything but time. Looking back, I wish I would have increased the size of the plate to try and double the size of the current tabs.

Anybody come up with a way to add side stabilizers to these boats like they put on cruise ships? LOL.

I know, I know KC...Just buy a 270 right???:grin::grin:

I like the way you did it. Thank you, I was lead to believe that I needed a tilting bow roller, which would place the roller out another foot or so. I found a extra locker door at a marine junk yard, so I'm going to mount on the door. I I need to put it back to original I can just replace the door. And if I screw up, I don't need to patch a 4 1/2" hole. Thank you you helped a lot.

Holy smokes, this one made it way to far back....AAAAAAAAAAAND BUMP! :smt101

Hey all.
I was reading through this thread after seeing the link to it posted in my intro thread and just now realized that I purchased my boat from the member in post 533.

Not sure about the rest of you but I'm slightly amused to know this.

Anyway, Mark sold me a good, clean tub which immediately allowed me to spend the weekend on Lake Winnipesaukee with my two favorite mermaids.
Completely different perspective being at the helm as an owner and actually having to care about what I'm doing. Learned a lot in those few days and look forward to learning a whole lot more!

I'd post a pic but the forum is kicking back an error for file size. Is it possible for cell phone pics to be too hi res?

Hi

I am not sure I am in the right place but I am looking at a 1988 268 Sundancer. It has a 454 with Alpha one. I am sure the engine is not original. It has 330 hours on it and pics of the engine look like its fairly new. I know those early brunswick years were prone to stringer and transom rot so I will have a guy check for that. The guy has all of the service records and the interior from the pics looks brand new. I love the wood on the older boats. The broker said it was the cleanest one he has ever seen.

My main question is that the head is the portable type. I would like to replace it with a marine head and holding tank set up. Is that possible without breaking the bank. Is it a difficult job? I would most likely not do it myself as the idea of cutting a hole in the bottom to install the seacock makes me too nervous.

I posted this on another part of the site because I was not sure which part would be more appropriate.

Thanks

Bruce,
You are looking at the same boat I have. Definitely check for stringer/transom rot, other than that they are great boats. Guys will warn you about the 454/Alpha1 combo. I've heard the stories, but have never had a problem. My outdrive has over 3500 hours on it with no issues. I rebuilt the 454 at 3100 hours.

I have the porta-head too. Blew By You recently added a vacu-flush system to his. If you search around here, you will see pics/posts about his install. He did it himself and did a nice job.

The rot issue scares me to death. I am guessing if it doesnt have rot by now it wont ever have it but it will be thoroughly checked for sure. The pics of the engine tell me it is fairly new relative to the age of the boat. I think if you dont "floor" it out of the hole the Alpha is probably ok . I can most likely install the head and plumbing but cutting a hole in the bottom is definitely beyond my scope and or nerve tolerance lol . Hopefully I can sell my boat before that one is gone.

Thanks for the info.

Bruce

Not really true. If the sealer that is there, starts to fail, it can let water in and start the rotting process late in life.

My suggestion, if she is dry now, take the swim platform mounts, transducers and trim tabs all off the boat and reseal everything really well. I use 5200 and it works great!

Have fun.

Try to avoid double posting....

I wish I had installed a vacuflush...LOL, but in actuality it was a Pump Type Head....Which I love way better than that Sani-Potti. Attached is a link back to the thread. Photos of the Install start around #57.

5200 is the best and the worst thing ever! its almost as bad as antiseaze.

blewbyyou, where did you get your bigger platform and hand holds? really like them!

BBY you dont like the SaniPottie? I have installed 2 in my boats and I like them, nice to have the option of pump out or remove for cleaning at no cost! and they are very $$ reasonable. Getaway you have the Alpha on yours and no issues? Damn I just bought everything for mine to change from the waaay too small 5.7 Alpha1 to a 7.4 Bravo1 if I didn't buy all the Bravo transom to out drive parts would have saved me lots. Seemed like everyone said if I didn't do the Bravo that I was wasting money?

454 with Alpha 1, 3500 hours no issues.

I absolutely dont like the portable head. My marina doesnt charge for pumpout and even if they did with an 18 or 20 gallon tank it doesnt happen that often. Marine head and holding tank are definitely my preference.

Nope, We spend quite a bit of time out on the hook back in Canyons, and what not. I like having a 20 Gallon Tank to send the waste to. I'm a little b!&ch when it comes to dealing with blackwater... The last time I dumped one of those porta/sani potties I almost lost my lunch. I made a shore connection so I can pump out at the house, or any RV dump station.... I don't want to see it, smell it, or touch it!
