Electronics. What’s the best?

Wow ! That's quite the setup. I would love a Flir, but they are proud of those baby's.

All, I have one last concern/issue. I have a Standard Horizon GX2200 which has AIS but it only has NMEA0183. Do I convert this (150.00), buy another radio(400.00), or buy an AIS black box from Furuno(700.00)?
The most important piece of electronic gear on your boat?? Clearly, on anyone's boat, it a VHF Radio. I will not try for a bargain basement price VHF. With all the modern features of GNSS, GPS, AIS (receive mode only, for now), I installed the ICOM 605 Fixed mount VHF with GPS/AIS. It's a little pricey, but, well worth it in the long term. Also, a radio is only as good as it's antenna. Check out the Shakespeare Galaxy Ratchet Mount. Hope this helps

Josh, I have always had 2 plotters on all of our boats, I love redundancy whenever possible, I usually run 1 main chart w/ radar overlay and the second plotter is used for combo , large radar and smaller chart and maybe depth etc.. I also run 2 ICOM radios and a seperate Vesper AIS transmitter / receiver
Overplayed to 1 plotter. Not to mention running an iPad and I installed a new computer for my cameras and movie library and want to run nobeltec to the bridge monitor ( a little excessive I know) but I love a toolbox filled with tools.

You have an impressive setup for sure!

Just to let everyone know. It was a pleasure to work with Jim at BOE. He is a stand-up guy who is willing o take your call, even on Thanksgiving weekend. Super excited to get it all installed, I'll definitely post some pics when it is complete.

Thank you again for all of your advice and opinions!

Josh

So much great info. Anyone have additional simrad info? Boe has a simrad deal and it is enticing me in a big way.

Josh

I just upgraded to all simrad equipment. 9" display, broadband radar w/overlay, and VHF with ais. Very happy with. All of it. As many have said, it comes down to personal preference. For me it was bundled radar and mfd and VHF with ais for competitive price. I will add that I believe only gar in has the auto routing function if that matters to you. They sued the other two and the function was disabled on my unit. That could be a reason to with or against Garmin.

When we used our Garmin on the south shore of LI it wouldn’t Auto Route so I called Garmin and they said “yeah the water is too shallow there it won’t work” so I sold it.

Holy cow Joe! Where are you planning to go?! That is quite an Arsenal, must be nice to have all that space and money! I have an iPad! I just can’t bring myself to make such a big financial commitment. I need building blocks - I would like to learn more about your set up. Hope you are well -

Since I started the thread I should give an update.

Furuno items started arriving last night. I have installed the chart plotter temporarily while I wait for the new panels to be fabricated from tecnografix. It came preloaded with an older software version so I went about updating it. You will need a micro SD card to do this so keep that in mind if you intend to buy a furuno.

I am very happy with the unit itself and the included charts. I was used to cmap on my raymarine but those are 300 bucks on Furuno so I’ll stick with the noaa/navionics that are loaded. It connected easily to WiFi and has activecaptain which is pretty cool.

Now just waiting on my open array and mount so I can knock that out. I am also doing Sirius weather.

Hate to post pics in progress but here is my dash all opened up.

I also am using my standard horizon gx2200 to output the AIS info with a milltech marine nk-80 converter to NMEA 2000.

The only thing I dislike is the pigtail off the back of the unit has the tiny little wires that need to be connected to a terminal block. This makes it difficult to remove and I wish they would have had a harness that unplugs like a car stereo. Anyway I purchased some miles connectors and will make my own.

Pics over the next few days.

Josh

Well, It's not finished yet but close to done. Still have to add the CAT diagnostics monitoring and systems monitoring displays. But all is Garmin. Almost went a different route with another manufacturer until that price slash last year happened on the Garmin 8212's. Saved almost 5K. IMG_1420.JPG IMG_0113.JPG

That is beautiful, well done.

I see a like button and a watch this thread button but, where is the watch this boat button?

Thank you.
I will probably put up some pics in the electronics install forum when it's done.
Well, when it's closer to done. THEY ARE NEVER DONE :D:D:D
Patrick of Marine Electric Systems out of Annapolis did a lot of the install. Had a local guy do the fiberglass work and the rest I did.
So far:
GARMIN
3- 8212's
GMR424 Radar
GHP Reactor Auto pilot kit
GRF-10 rudder feedback sensor
GSD-24 sounder box
VHF-200
AIS 600 transceiver
ICOM M504
Clarion CMS2 with remote
Alpine speakers,sub and amps
Couple of transducers
Maretron 2K100 J1939/NMEA 200 Gateways
Alba-Combi Converter for systems monitor (not finished yet)
Trolling Valves (not finished yet)
And more (not finished yet)

Thank you.

Wow! What do that glass work cost?!

Appreciate the great info your are all passing along. I'm just getting started on this process and will be yanking the SR Navigator when the wraps come off in March. I plan to start with the GPS/plotter first as well as the VHF/AIS. Then I'd like to replace the rest a little at a time. The other electronics work fine but they are way behind the curve with all of the new stuff out there.

Well here is the new package all installed. The panels came out great. Eventually I want to add another 12” display and move the autopilot next to the tridata but that’s another 5k so for now it’s done other then calibrating everything and aligning the heading sensor and radar.

I have no idea why the pics are sideways. They don’t show that way on my phone.

That's the manufacturer is was considering until that price slash on 8212's last year.
Looks GREAT:):)
Funny I also had an issue with the pics from my phone once before. Think it was the orientation of the phone when I took the pic.

I am playing with the NOAA and Navionic's charts that come loaded into the unit. The C-Map charts are 300 bucks, but the curiosity of seeing them is killing me. I may pay once just to see what I like best. What are you running?

It looks great Josh

Josh, I’m doing the same as you right now although that may change as I use the boat in the spring $300 is a lot of coin for charts.

I've purchased both the Navionic's and the C Map. I find the Navionic's charts the more detailed and accurate for Florida waters. For my money Navionic's hands down! I have been told that the C Map uses explorer charts for the Bahama's which would be preferable.
