I'm looking at a new (used) boat that has a Cummins QSB 6.7 480 mhp engine in it. I've only has gas engines, so diesels are a bit of a new experience for me. Can anyone offer any thoughts on these engines? Problem areas I should watch out for when checking out the boat? It's a 2014 model.

B, your best resource will be sbmar.com Tony Athens is widely regarded as the go-to for all things Cummins. (note, no "g" in Cummins)

Seems like a lot of horsepower out of a 6.7 liter engine but Tony will not steer you wrong, I would reach out to them and/or post on their forum - they are all very helpful.

To my understanding, there are a couple versions of the 6.7 with various hp levels. The output depends on the tuning. There is another variant that outputs upward of 500 hp as well. The 6.7 took over the position of the QSB 5.9, with the same power outputs. I don't know a lot about diesels, but it seems like more displacement with same output should be less strain over the engine life.
