I recently bought a 2006 320SDA with Mercury’s SystemView SC5000. When I bought it I noticed that the speedo (both dash unit and speed in SC5000) wasn’t working (probably a bad paddle wheel as the SC5000 shows ‘none’ in the speed section where it should display paddle/pitot/GPS) I really haven’t put much thought into it as I figured that boat speedos are inherently inaccurate anyway and the boat is equipped with a Garmin 740s GPS and I can get speed data from there. Now that fall is rolling around I’m looking for projects to do on the boat. I understand that the GPS can be connected to the SC5000 via NMEA 0813. I pulled the panel tonight to look at the harness for my SC5000 and I found the blue/white wires. They are attached to a harness/plug. The NMEA 0813 connections from my garmin has no harness. Is this a piece that I need to buy or am I OK splicing the wires into the blue/white wires from the SC5000? Anyone do this? Can you post pics of your connections?

SO this is the harness/plug that I was talking about. Anyone know where a guy can get a harness like this so that I can get the tx wire from my 740 and attach it to the system view so that I can have NMEA 0183 connection?

If I were you, I’d swing by Luke’s to see if they have any ideas.

I like your tag line. I’ve been known to have one too many at the Beer Barrel at PIB, and when they sing the line “south Detroit”, I yell, “that’s called Windsor Ontario!” Journey was good at lyrics, but not so good with maps.

Lol

I’ll give Luke a call next week

My new vhf radio has 2 wires for NMEA as well, and they are just bare. 90% certain you can just splice together, if you want to be able to connect/reconnect, crimp on some quick connects (from the auto parts store). I’ll be attempting the install on Sunday. I’m connecting my old northstar gps to it. One of the things you might need to do is configure the Garmin device’s NMEA output strings to be on, and which ones you want to output. The SC5000 should have a document explaining what NMEA strings it will accept/understand, and those are the ones you want to turn on in the garmin. I guess I found out what project you are tackling first!
