1st post here. Looking to purchase a 2000 Sundancer 270. Is a single 7.4 MPI enough or is twin power needed on this size boat? Is mpi the same as EFI ? Any other pointers to consider? Will be located on fresh water in the Columbia river.
Thanks

Speaking from first-hand experience, one of my good friends has a 1999 270 with a single 7.4 MPI and bravo three outdrive. It’s a complete dog out of the hole. In my opinion anything over a 26 foot needs twins. He even went as far as to have new bigger trim tabs made. It did help, still a dog though. My advice would be to sea trial it with half a tank of freshwater and both tanks 1/2 full of fuel. His boat does have a generator.

Well the power being "enough" depends on how you'll use it. If you're cruising at no-wake speeds most of the day having a single screw will be nice at the fuel pump. If you're looking to get places quick with a handful of friends perhaps you'll want more.

Get 'er surveyed...

9'2" beam makes a tight fit for twins so one big block is the norm. Sea Ray did offer twin 4.3 but not 5.7 . The twin 4.3 considering the added weight and drag in the water with the outdrives and mechanics nightmare made the 7.4 the more popular choice. Bottom line with the overall size and weight of this platform there is not much room for performance . With 4 adults gas tanks filled and gear even with a big block your not going to be jumping out of the hole.

Welcome aboard.

I agree, the ER is very tight with twins and it will not be a speed demon out of the hole with any combination. I put 30 inch tabs on my 270 to get it up on plane faster and to cruise at low speed without plowing bow up. I would choose the 7.4 and upgrade the tabs.

I had a 280 with a single 496 Mag and had the boat up on plane several time with 8 adults onboard. While the EFI TB 7.4 is somewhat underpowered I have driven two of them and had no issues with getting them on plane with 4 adults onboard.

Never had an issue getting my 270 single 7.4 up on plane with fuel and people.
