I purchased a 1999 290 Sundancer with twin 350's. Boat came with generator but past owner removed it. Generator is now sitting on my garage floor. I am going to recondition it and want to put it back in boat. Is there anyway of doing this without removal of one motor? If I took off Manifold and Riser maybe??? Has anyone done this and have experience.

I haven't done this myself, but I'm in the middle of changing out a circulating pump on my generator and basically have it in pieces. From what I see now I believe it's possible to remove your riser and manifold as you mentioned and then section the generator.

Since it's in your garage now you could break it down into components and reassemble it in place in the bilge. Separate the winding from the motor, pull the manifold and maybe even the head. The motor might be heavy and difficult to lower in place but I believe it can be done.

Honestly, it might be easier to just pull the main engine and install it in one piece if that's an option.

Here's a link to someone who's done some of what I mentioned.

Can you ask the previous owner how he got it out? Pretty sure the answer is no, reason, with my 2000 290 at one point I was having generator issues. There was discussion about having to remove it and that the engine would have to come out. They ended up fixing it without having to removing it.

How did you make out installing the Generator?

This probably doesn't help for your 1999, but I figured it might be useful for other members to know that I have just removed my generator from a 2008 290. I built a 2x6 overhead beam standing on the two side foot steps. Then ratchet strapped them to rear cleats and around radar arch to stop it from falling over forward or backwards. Block and tackle to lift the 200 lb generator. I was thinking I was going to have to tilt it out at 45 degrees, but it came out vertically with about 1" clearance from the front of motor.

Good to know, any pics of it?

Welcome aboard!

I'll take a picture when I put it back in the spring. Busy repainting it and replacing the bottom steel tray which is completely rusted. This a Kohler 5ecd.

May want to replace your Oil pump oring while you're there. Notorious for drying out and leaking. Just removed my 6.5 cz for the oring leak myself. In 5-8 hours of running it would lose a pint.

Update. Genset is still sitting in garage. I have rebuild it and should be function testing it soon. Hopefully I will be able to get in boat in spring. I might just sell it as they seem to be worth a good amount if in running order.
