Installed a second set of JL's in my arch.

Do you think the 7.7s are actually noticeably different than the MX650 6.5"? Since the sub is handling all low frequency and you likely have a high pass x-over on the 7.7s at 80 Hz I would think the frequency response or sound between the two are near identical? Been debating between 6.5 and 7.7 myself.
In a side x side demo, there is an audible difference in output between the 6.5" and 7.7" due to its 20% more mid-bass surface area. Even with out additional amp power, the larger speaker naturally puts out more. Unless fitment is an issue with the larger speaker, id go 7.7 over the 6.5".

Thanks for all you share with all of us. I am excited to build a system in the future. After new navigation electronics.

I think you gain increased output with larger speakers and more watts. Better sound at higher volumes. Sound is very subjective anyway. I can tell you that my 4 mx650's and mx10 sub with a m700/5 amp sounds very satisfying to my ear at half volume. Its hard for me to imagine it sounding any better. louder doesn't mean better sound quality. At some point how much is enough? Maybe if you want to overcome engine and wind noise when cruising. I think I have reached my fulfillment level. Happy JL customer.
I have a similar set up with 4 JL 6.5's & a JL 10" sub with a JL 700/5 amp. Couldn't be happier with the sound quality.

I'll probably go with 7.7 just in case I'm wrong, but I doubt you can tell the difference with a 80 hz crossover. Without it, sure makes sense and mid bass prob much louder and better with 7.7. But if you purposely cut that out with xover, I question if there's a difference. Might be an interesting experiment at West Marine if they have a receiver that can be configured with a high pass output. Again, I could be wrong. Sound quality is not something that can be easily specd out on paper.

I have the 6.5s and 7.7s on two different amps. I can adjust each set by separate. I still haven't played with the adjustments yet.

@pyro

I run a 6.5 and 8 of two different bands, side x side. All are crossed over hi-pass at the same Hz. The difference is there.

I run two pairs of 10" and 12" woofers of 2 different brands. Each pairing is on the same mono amp, with an A/B switch. So same tuning and same wattage, and you can most certainly hear the difference between the two different sized drivers.

I have to correct this... We have the 8x8 not the 7x7.

I love the JL line up.
We have six 8X8 , two 6.5 and two 10 subs. The 8s in my opinion sound much better than the 6.5. You get the bass and the highs you need out of them.

I will never have a kick-a$$ stereo, why spend the money? The Admiral would never let me play it at the volume I would like. LOL

My better half and kids all know there is a time of the day they are just going to have to put up with me bumping it hard for a hour or two. That is the pay off for all they put me through about where to camp, what water toys to bring , shoes that they don’t need on a boat... etc... lol
Oh and the 8k in fuel use each summer.

That's a awesome looking system. What amps are you using?

I'm really thinking of adding 2 more 7.7's, but I know some of you would steer me against doing it. The first one I'd like to add is under the helm seat facing the cooler door. That one should be fine. The other that I think would give good sound and a cool look is next to the sub. NOW.. The sub and speakers are infinite-baffles. Here's a quote from JL.... "CCX models have woofers specifically designed for infinite-baffle applications. In plain english, this means that they are designed to operate without an enclosure behind them. The bass response of the speaker will suffer significantly if placed in a small enclosure" There is a lot of open air in that area. I was also told and shown pictures of people who have done it. I'm just thinking for now though.

The arch looks great!
I would add them!

Thanks for the description Wylie_tunes, you've convinced me! I'll definitely go for the 7.7s based on your feedback.

All the JL stuff is top-notch. When deciding on my present system, one notices the different frequencies and sound from the 6.5's, 7.7's, and 8.8's. To cover all of my bases, went with 6.5's in the top of the arch, and a pair of both 7.7's and 8.8's on the sides of the arch. Threw an additional pair of 7.7's on the back for the swim platform area. Two 10" subs for base. Nothing like having crystal clear concert sound at any level. Only thing I wish I did different was to put 8.8's on the swim platform vs 7.7's. The 8.8's are amazing speakers, not cheap - but well worth the money IMO.

This is what I did in my 340. It's very loud and clear. I replaced all the stock speakers with m770s, added a set of m880s and 2 subs. I have one under the helm seat also. Couldn't find the pic. I have 2 amps 100.5 and 600.6.

As a former owner of 2 sets of JL's and JL subwoofer, do yourself a tremendous favor and get some ant-theft screws to mount the speakers, maybe do a group buy with some friends on some of the better ones. All 4 or my speakers and subwoofer walked right off my 330 back in September - horrible feeling.

That is crazy! did they damage anything?

Just finished up installing a set of 7.7's in the arch. Just so you guys know, they fit. I was cheap and used a jig saw to cut the holes. It was pretty easy using a bit used for metal. Came out almost perfect with no chips. I went with led rings for the look. Here's a couple pics. I didn't get a chance to hear them yet. ( My boat is a DISASTER)

Where did you get the led rings?
