290 Sundancer Prop Question

Magster, do you have the wings installed on your boat? Doc, have you installed yours yet and do they help (work)?

BRAVO !!!3 is the difference.

I agree, having a 01 290 with 5.0l and 3's...works real good, full of water and fuel w/up to 4 people...more people than that and it takes a little while to climb up on plane. I plane faster w/o tabs than my friends who have the same vintage 290's w/5.7's with B1's w/full tabs. A good set up guy might be able to help you w/ different props and maybe larger tabs...there will be tradeoffs though. You may even be able to "tweek" the props you have. My friends B1's are subject to cavitation when getting on plane when the props get hours on them.

Nope, I just have the standard cavitation plate. I have trim tabs but don't really need them unless I have all my fat friends on one side of the boat.

I stepped down to 22's on my 94 290.I ran an easy 36 or so mph at 4100rpm's and had some stick left. She hops right up out of the hole with 4 on board.

I have a 1999 290 Sundancer with twin 5.0 engines with Alpha One outdrives. My props have three blades at 19 degrees.
Here is my question, I have a heck of a time getting out of the hole and up on plane. Once I do the boat runs fine. I am looking for some ideas on how to improve getting up on plane. I have been think about going to four blade props. I would appreciate any feedback.

Thanks - Seayall
Did you try the 4 blades props? I’m having the same problem (same boat 98 290 sundancer with twin 5.0’s). My WOT rpm is 3600 and 29 mph)

Your WOT is way low for those motors. Is the bottom clean? Last time the motors have been tuned up? What props are on it now?

In addition to what was said above, are you trimming up properly? What about the other questions asked earlier in this (almost 9-year old) thread? Is this a new problem or has it always done this? What was it like on the sea trial?

The parts manual for this boat says the prop should be 14.5x 17
But what props are ACTUALLY on it? You have to physically look at the prop.

What about the other questions? Bottom/drive growth? Trimming? New problem/existing problem? C'mon, now, you gotta help us help you! :)

Every boat is different, so don't take this is a golden rule, but on our 98 290 I run twin 5.7EFI 260HP Alphas with 4 blade Mercury Diamond4 14x20 Aluminum props. I turn 4600 RPM at WOT around 37mph and cruise around 3100 @ 27mph

If stainless I would have needed to step pitch down a bit, since the aluminum flexes. I ended up testing 3 different sets of props to get to our final selection...so it takes some time.

The bottom was pretty clean However, the outdrives were ugly. Clean the outdrives clean the prop went for a run and only got 29 Mph At 3600 RPM. Trim tabs or neutral and outdrive trim was tweaked a little bit to get to 29 mph

Are the motors EFI's or carbs? If they're EFI you could have someone pull codes and check for misfire or other issues, but I'd be looking at the motors for a tune or the props for potential damage now.

I think I’m going to try a pair of 17 inch props right now my belief is the 19s are putting a lot of torque on the engines and are working way too hard so when I go to 19’s I should be able to get between 4600. 4900 RPM and the engines won’t have to work as hard

The engines are throttlebody fuel injected and are purring like a kitten

Maybe, but you could be down a cylinder or something. Only running up to 3600RPM is a major problem, either the motors are not making full power or something is holding the boat back which will ultimately damage the motors. How about borrow a set of props and go for a run? Those 19's were on my boat and ran just fine up to 4800, so if they're in good shape they're not the problem

Don't focus on the prop pitch just yet. 2" isn't going to net you over 1,000RPM. The props need cleaning. Depending on what you mean by the saying the bottom and drives are now clean, that could still be the issue. Things need to be VERY clean to get the proper efficiency/performance.

Also, what do you mean by "tweaked a little"? "A little" is not the proper way to find Max WOT RPM/Speed. You need to tweak the trim A LOT - till RPM's/Speed no longer increase or you ventilate. If you don't know how to properly trim the engines, say so - we can help. But based on the information that's been presented, the RPM issue could still very well be due to dirtiness and not trimming it properly.

Please try to answer every question asked - I'm not sure if you are just not reading everything or you're finding it irritating to answer these questions. But they're being asked for a reason and without more info, it's really hard for us to help... which we are trying to do. For example, is this a new issue or has it always been this way?
