this winter the marina had Holland Prop come in and provide free scans of props. After receiving my scan report they recommended a very expensive “repair” of my props. The report said I had no cracks or obvious damage but that my port prop had a .07% deviation and my starboard prop had a .29% deviation. I have had no vibrations or problems. I had the scans done because they were free and figured that if something severe was wrong it would be discovered. Does anyone think I should spend the money on this? Would there being any potential damage done if left?

Phasma, my guess is they are out trolling for business. That being said, if there is an undetectable vibration it could, over time, ruin your cutlass bearing on that shaft.

Your deviation numbers are so small that I probably would not worry about it.

Thanks firstclass, that was my gut feeling as well but wasn’t sure. Both cutless bearings were replaced this winter. One was cracked. I’m going to assume it was from normal wear and keep an eye on things this year.

How much was the estimate to repair?

Deviation from what?....as compared to Class S, or Class 1 prop parameters. Or are they talking about deviation of a specific measurement like prop pitch? How much $$$?

Had my props done by Holland Propeller a while back. They were essentially new props with maybe 20 hours on them. Boat ran fine before with no vibrations. After the scan, the boat top speed increased from 38mph to 41mph. it still ran fine with no vibrations. The report was detailed and showed some minor out of spec surface areas on each prop before that were repaired. This boat has always been fuel efficient so I'm not sure how much things improved. As I understand the analysis, the actual shape of every area of your prop is compared to a design ideal shape. The repair process syncs up the two.

Spot on sbw1. When your boat picked up a little top end it might have been because they got the props well balanced to each other but they might have added a small bit of cup to the blades.

I have had two sets of props fixed at Holland, I would trust them. Free scans does not mean that they are desperate for business, these guys are always busy and do good work. I am having another set tuned up this winter. With our Diesel engines just the power and force alone can cause these props to get out of toon after just one year. Mine cost between 1,000.00 - 1,200.00 for the set.

Totally agree here. Been using Holland for about 15 years. Have a set that just got tuned and waiting to install them before boat launches in a few months. Never pushy and not desperate at all.
