Gas smell at WOT

Mike,

There is a relatively easy way to tell what is going on if you still haven't found the problem.

If you know a tech who has access to this or a Rinda diagnostic tool......it should tell you exactly what is going on.

The nice part about the Mercruiser version is that you can save a data log of the boat at speed and compare the data to the other engine. It is money well spent to have a baseline for both engines.

If it is an injector issue.....the O2 sensor will be out of range and fuel trims will be negative.

Ok an update. One spark plug wire was bad, replaced all wires and new cap. Start engines, idle down my canal to the ICW. Get up on plane fine. Rev engines to WOT and both engines go smoothly to 4600 rpm, throttles are even. Go down the ICW for a while everything going well. Approach a no wake zone, slow down to idle speed. Turn around and throttle back up to WOT. Once again port engine only goes to 3600 rpm, stbd to 4600 rpm. Throttles are way off. Go back to cruising rpms at 3500-3600, throttles still off. Pull up to a friends dock watch a ballgame. Leave his dock about 4 hours later. Go down the canal to ICW and push throttles to WOT. They are even and both engines go to 4600 rpm with throttles even. Since the weather was deteriating I headed back to my dock. I guess I might just have to get the Rinda diagnostic tool, as PlayDate. suggested.

Didn't read the entire thread, but that's how the paint chip issue plays out. Every time you shut down the chips drop back and then reconfigure themselves on start up

scoflaw- are you talking about the cool fuel module?

Yes indeed, When I had that issue I put a fuel pressure gauge on the rail. Cycled the key on and off half a dozen times and saw pressures from 35 to 65.
Thanks, I'll look into that.

Mitch,

The "new" Gen III version was released 2/1/2009 by Mercruiser. Owners have reported problems with some 2010 models which probably used leftover stock. I haven't heard of a problem on a 2011 boat which means their subcontractor finally understood the words: "stop painting the inside of the pump module".

I bought a boat in 2015 that had new 8.1's installed Jan '14 that ended up having this issue, got them replaced by Mercury in 2017. My symptoms were different though, mostly involved engine stalling after prolonged idling (i.e. long no wake zone).

Ok, looked into the cool fuel filter. Both of mine were changed to the new design by the previous owner. I guess the next thing is to check the fuel pressure.

Heard from a knowledgeable source the paint issue went from 2005 to 2017
I'll have to check in to that. I thought the redesigned cool fuel module was not painted.
