Has anyone purchased a kit or built a wireless trailer camera for towing? I’d like to have better visibility of what’s behind me when towing. Plenty of wired solutions but they require dedicated monitors and lots of wording. I looked at the GoPro product but I’ve heard there is a delay in live streaming (this might be on the older models).

WiFi to my iPad or iPhone would be ideal.

Thoughts appreciated.

I've done some analog wireless backup cameras in vehicles. the issue there is you will need 12v power to the transmitter and the camera at the back of the trailer. Running lights should do it if you don't mind having them on all the time.
Anything that digitizes the signal, especially with wifi will have a latency delay. Analog is real time. Not too many devices take analog. The dedicated monitors are pretty cheap though. Or your rig may have an aux video input besides your backup camera built in (if you have that).
See if there's a such a thing as a composite video to lightning connector for you pad. not sure that exists.

Tks 370.

I've poked around a bit more and will try setting up a test using an old iphone. The tow car doesn't have an aux jack for video but I've read where you can use the car wifi and send it to the main display. Not certain I want to hijack the main display so I'll likely opt for an old iPad mini or maybe larger as a monitor.

More and more I'm seeing people come right up behind a vehicle and move over a lane to pass at the last minute.....requires a triple check. While the car has all the obstacle detection it's worthless with a trailer (and I'm still old school and look). Delay is the biggest concern but I've red the Hero7 has low latency and might work depending on your wifi setup. I've also seen that Netgear/Nighthawk has a mobile wifi solution that might help with the speed P2P.

I'll report back.

Thanks again.

Tonka,

Thanks...looks like a few good options at tadibrothers.

I did hook up (car only) a test camera using a Wyze camera I borrowed. Static seems to work fine. I'll get it out on the road and see how it does; blur, latency, night time.

FYI, wyze wouldn't work for this use case, way too choppy.

Setup was: Wyze connected to dedicated hotspot (not phone) viewed through Wyze app on iPhone.

Findings:
Static was OK.
Dynamic, I'm afraid the camera relies too much on compression to get the job done and when the image is constantly moving it overwhelms the camera (or possibly the connection) in a few seconds.

I installed a wireless setup. Waste of time, effort, and money. While the distance from front seat to rear trailer isn't huge, it is enough to cause delay issues. Was supposed to help in backing into shed and seeing cars behind me while driving. Well, I can see some cars, but not good enough to trust making a turn. As for backing into the shed, more hassle than it was worth. Now I'm trying to think of some use for the cameras around the house!
