420 DA Thread

I've seen that so many times. Someone's impellers will fail and they'll simply replace them and not chase the fragments. I know it's a pain but I wouldn't be able to relax knowing that debris was lodged somewhere waiting to bite me.

Now 36 vanes is pretty extraordinary. Amazing it lasted this long.

My search shows that the 2003 was not a cored hull... can anyone else confirm this? Looking at changing (adding) a shoot through transducer for fishfinder.... (first post, new member, very soon to be new (to me) boat). 2003...

First, welcome to this group of great enthusiasts. There are others in this forum that know better than I but for what it's worth, I have been told by several sources that 2003 and later 420/44's do NOT have a cored hull.

Thank you! I'm looking forward to this new chapter... I promised the kids that our next boat would be something that we could vacation on - we are moving up from a 31' center console. Not that this is a fishing platform - but in my years of boat ownership - I have never found a boat that I didn't or couldn't fish off of. The swim platform will be a great size for snapper and grouper fishing... that's the reason for the question. I don't want to have to short haul just to install a new transducer - so a shoot through makes sense.

So it seems by all comments about the salon A/C that a lot of us have had the unit go bad about now (12-16 years). Mine just decided to leak and it’s trashed Bad timing, Memorial Day weekend, warmest in years on the Gulf coast. My tech suggests that I NOT go with a 16k unit since it will run shorter times to cool to set point and that it will not dehumidify the cabin as well as one that stays on longer. The 12k made my salon an icebox. Many of you (see all) have so much more experience with this and I need to order unit this Tuesday. Any insight would be really welcomed. Thanks

He's not wrong in theory that a unit that is too BIG for a space will not be as comfortable. It is the same in houses. I'm assuming that Dometic makes a 12K unit and then a 16K unit? When mine was replaced they put in another 12K unit. As a complete neophyte, I wasn't aware that getting a bigger unit was even an option. The new units are more efficient than the early 2000's originals. I have no complaints having gone back in with another 12K unit. For what it's worth.....

I replaced my salon and forward v-birth units last year. Dometic 16k in salon and 8k in v-birth. Barely ever have to crank up the v-birth unit, I don’t like that air blowing on me when sleeping. Both units are very quiet.

Great. Hate the air in my face too. I’ll go with the 12 and with it being new and hopefully more efficient than the one I’m taking out, may not need the BR one on. Thanks for response. Have a safe weekend.

I just installed the 12K Dometic DTU in the salon and the 10K Dometic DTU in the V Berth and the 16K in the cockpit. I and a buddy installed all three. They work great. The Salon installation was the toughest for me due to access. I heard some here on CSR say they did not need to cut any of the framing in the triangle to remove old unit out. If you can remove the fan from the unit it may come out. The new fan on unit is easy to loosen nuts and remove so you can drop unit in and then reassemble. It was about a 4 hour job for each unit for us to install. You will also need more of the AC water line and hose adapter (5/8" I think) to lengthen existing hoses to new unit. If you plan to use the existing wall thermostat you will need to split the phone cable within and splice two wires together to make it work. I think its the blue and bare wire together. Let me know if you need further details... I bough the unit from CitiMarine. It arrives in about 2 days.

I can't thank you enough for this insight. It probably saved me 10 hours on one unit given my ability. It turns out my V berth unit was replaced a few years back for the POS last owner. My cockpit unit is original so I'm on borrowed time with it. 16K in the cockpit makes so much sense. Once again, thank you very much.

I seldom run my cockpit AC, it just doesn't do much in the Texas heat when the whole area is wide open. Keeps my knews cool I guess. I probably use the heat more in the winter than the AC in the summer. Now the heat will burn you up no matter how cold it is outside.

Guys , ITs a boat. The bs of short cycling is a fantasy. The boat retains nothing on a hot summer day . Get the largest BTUS u can .( 16,000 ) on a really hot day with warm water u want COLD air . U can slow the fan to make up for btus. Don't short sell. ITs not a house . ITS A BOAT>

Dometic does not make a 12K unit anymore. In this arena, a 10K or 16K. I appreciate the insight. Bought the 16
