We are heading out Saturday for a long trip up the lake - 24 miles. We are planning on getting fuel and pumping out before we leave. We typically run the generator when we leave the dock, however , is it proper etiquette or required to turn it off while refueling? Or is it ok to leave it on?

Thanks!!

Gas, off for certain.

Diesel, well I leave mine on. Shut down the mains, but genset runs. Marina never had a prob.

I might be wrong. Let me know if I am doing something wrong.

Blowers off... everything off while the fuel is going into the tank

There's a few marinas here in TN that have signage when you enter that say "No Generators In Use While Docked"

For me common courtesy would be to shut everything off including stereo and keep all passengers under control.

Nothing like having kids/pets/inconsiderate adults running up and down the dock while trying to fuel or pump out.

My approach is this:
  • Dock. Engine off, all systems off.i leave the gauges on so I can see the fuel level (not ideal, but helps prevent overfilling)
  • Close all doors / windows / hatches.
  • All passengers off.
  • Fuel.
  • Open all doors / windows / hatches
  • Activate blower 5 minutes.
  • Check bilges.
  • Start engine.
  • Passengers embark.
My wife gets impatient with my procedure. Sometimes I’ll check the bilges, then let passengers on while the blower runs.

Thanks for all the replies, once I leave the dock, I guess I simply go down there, start the generator, and then flip the switches from shore to gen I'm good to go right?

I usually shut all of the breakers off before I disconnect, then once I start the genny I switch to genny power and turn on whichever breakers I’m going to be using.
