460 DA Owners Thread

I am usually one to do all the service work and projects in the fall however last fall was busy so some got pushed to this spring.

Punch list all completed two weekends ago. These where some of the last on it.

Changing out all the drink holders to accommodate the taller tumblers has been a nice upgrade, New AGM inverter batteries .. lots of run time off the gen now, last pic my amazing girlfriend wanted to learn the process for all the fluid changes. She changed the racors, gen oil/ filter, engine oil/ filters, coolant filters, trans oil and cleaned the screens.

For all of us 460 owners you all know how much of a pain in the @#$ changing the Starboard impeller is . Also for me as I am left handed it is even more of a pain.

I know taking the pump off the motor probably is the easiest to change the impeller however the 12 bolts to remove it and then the task of getting the hose off is it really the better.

Looking for your thoughts here and tips on how you do the job.

Do you have the OEM pump or the SMX? If it's the OEM just pay someone to do it for you! ;)

I hear ya! It is the OEM.
I wish that was a option. to get a qualified cummings tech to my end of the lake... just in drive time it is 500.00 and these are truck techs not boat techs.

The SMX pump is a far better pump in my opinion. Because it is splined and not keyed you can change the impeller far easier. Perhaps install one on the stbd. and have a much easier time going forward?

I agree, PITA! I considered having a stainless elbow bent to make the plumbing connection easier to put on and off. I did replace my pump with an SMX version and that's much easier. Good luck!

My buddy had this issue last summer. I believe the result was that there is a clutch wheel in the system that simply needed to be tightened up a little bit to maintain pressure on the cord.

Another buddy had the issue but his problem was that he cleaned his cord so well and made it so slippery it was just sliding through the rollers...LOL

I found cleaning the cord with a gritty cleaner scraped all the crud off the cord and it goes back into the holder much easier now.

I put on SMX pumps 9 or 10 years ago and just changed my impellers a month ago just before launch. Port motor took ten minutes, starboard maybe 20. Splined impellers, no key to worry about and the old ones looked perfect after three Great Lakes boating seasons.
Two or three tie wraps on each and coat them with dishwashing soap. Snip the tie wraps off, one after the other as the impeller goes into place; new O ring gasket and replace the cover using a bit of silicone grease on the plate against the impeller (if you haven't launched yet.) Don't forget to open up your seawater coolant valves if you did this in water.
Even the starboard impeller is easy. (Or you can pre-load the impeller into a tomato soup can if you cut out the opposite end and push the impeller through, if that's easier. It's the advantage of a splined impeller over a keyed one.)

Great hints on beating that damn starboard one. I love the soup can idea. Do the zip ties make it that much easer?

Absolutely, place three zip ties around the vanes and gently compress. Apply soap and insert the impeller while snipping one tie after the other. The impeller will slip in with minimal effort and you don't have to worry about orientation if it is splined. I've used the soup can trick a couple of times and to preload the can you must remove all burs from the edge plus have a hole cut in the other end. You still might have to compress the vanes with zip ties to initially get it into the can. The soup can fits perfectly inside the SMX and give the impeller a push with a ratchet handle into place. I didn't use that trick this time because I find just compressing with zip ties works just as well for me.
I came across this interesting tool. http://www.impellertool.com/ , similar idea to the soup can, not sure if it still available?

New pump ordered. Will use zip ties.

Thanks for the tips.

Wal mart is where I get mine. Nothing special.

Looking for replacement wiper blades. Anyone find a replacement.
This is what I got from Defender.com...probably overkill, but I have a '99 and I am not sure how your arms allow the attachment of the blade assembly. They came in and work fine, just pricey!!!

551041WIP-28 ~ Roca W Series Wiper Blade ~ $59.99ea.

Okay i have tried finding the thread that had the info on the relay for the A/C pump not coming on with all the units. The pump comes on for cockpit and master stateroom not the salon. Anyone have any info on where to get one from

John

Wipers: 28” on Amazon, really inexpensive, like seven bucks each. Just adapt them using the existing hardware. I had to drill one hole through each to accept the Sea Ray wiper bracket.
ANCO 31-Series 31-28 Wiper Blade - 28"

Time to change the salon A/C unit, has anyone changed theirs. What brand did you use any issues I should be aware of?
Bob

All three of mine have been replaced at different times. Last one replaced three months ago. Dometic was replaced with another of the same brand.
