Gel-Coat disaster

I've had good success with WD40 in removing adhesive. Maybe try soaking the masking tape in that & let it sit overnight. Then give the stripe removing tool a go the following day. Good luck! Sorry to see it such a mess.

Paint will not stick to anything that has had WD40 on it.

I would forget this as a gel coat project and look to paint as a DIY job to have anyone else touch this you are going to get killed in labor costs. Cleaning the hardware is going to be a pain but you can do it done over time.

Many good topside paints can be rolled and tipped to a high gloss. Weather and dust conditions are the problem - Tenting would help this. Its the prep below that needs to be done right. Just like a car a great paint job over bad body work will look just as bad.

If you can operate a DA Sander you can probably get most of the hull in good shape using a fairing material and giving it a good sanding. When finish sanding trust your feel more than your eyes.

From the pictures posted, I'm not convinced that the boat need to be refinished......I have seen some nasty gel come back from the dead, and shine again. Its all labor, and certainly a DIY type project. Wet sanding, compound, polish, wax......repeat some steps next year.

As far as the gypsy that taped the boat....they had no intention of refinishing it and I do see this as a buyer beware situation (sorry). I hope the money put down to start was minimal.

Good luck, get the tape off and reevaluate next steps.

Thank you all for the responses. I really appreciate it.

1st Never use masking tape / Painters tape
yes spraying gel over gelkote is fine must be scuffed up and wiped with acetone
bondo no Dura glass yes and kitty hair is good just harder to work with
Never seen any one tape snaps for top what hacks you found unfortunately
