Marinco 50 to 30 Adapter differences.

The other nice thing about the splitter is you can plug the two 30amps into your boat and only have one 50amp cord coming out the back of the boat. I have that setup at the dock where I can leave that cord at the dock...so when I come back I just have one cord to plug in the boat...

OK - A couple of points....

@Blueone "The other nice thing about the splitter is you can plug the two 30amps into your boat and only have one 50amp cord coming out the back of the boat."

Not a great idea - You are using wiring designed for 50A with a potential draw of 60A...This is a fire waiting to happen if you are not careful with what is turned on.... I only recommend doing this if it's a last resort. In other words, two 30A are not available...Further, a 50A cord is really bulky and 30A cords are easier to manage.

@MonacoMike , to answer your question, it depends.... THEY ARE NOT INTERCHANGABLE

So, you need to contact the perspective marina and ask which outlet they have...

OR - Buy either cord and get the pigtail adapter also -

118A - 50A 125V to 50A 125v/250v
or
123A - 50A 125v/250v to 50a 125v

This could be an interesting debate... I'm sure we all agree that staying as far from the limit of a given wire as possible is a good thing, right?

So yes, two 30's have the potential draw of 60 amps, but in my experience, that potential is unlikely. The water heater, microwave and stove burners all cycle on and off... eventually whoever is using a hair dryer has dry hair...

Pushing one of the 30 amp legs to/over 30 though? Hold my beer! I peer into the cabinet EVERY DAY to make sure those circuits aren't about to pop a breaker. I kill the water heater there, shutdown an AC unit there... If I'm slow on the draw, sometimes the panel breaker will trip, other times it's one in the transom locker.

Never though, in 20 years with this boat (including living on it) have I popped a 50A breaker on the dock. (it's never even gotten warm - I've checked)

I'm with you on 50A cords though - they're beasts.

Maybe I am not clear. You are extending the 50amp plug on the shore power pedestal using an extension cord to the boat where you plug the splitter into it.

That is no different than plugging the splitter into the shore power pedestal and two 30amp extension cords to the boat...

The 165AY requires a 250v stantion. That is 2 125v 50 amp legs, out of phase that make up the 250v/50 power. The 165AY adapter will deliver each 50A Leg to each 30A pigtail. You are delivering a full 30 amp to each of the bosts main breakers, allowing FULL current draw (30amp each-60 amp total)

The 152AY adapter is different. It is a single 50A 125v circuit that splits to 2 - 30 amp pigtails. Maximum current draw on the boat is now limited to the pedestal @50 amp.

The 2 adapters are not interchangeable, and have different pin layouts (125 has 1 outward tab, 250 has 2 tabs)

The 165AY is a very common adapter to have and i have only seen 2 marinas locally wtih the 152AY - 50/125 socket (both federal parks).

You were correct here about the power legs, one adapter uses only one leg, while the one I am ordering splits a leg to each 30 amp output? I just could not grasp all that from text.

Our boat is 50/240 and very few marinas have a direct connect for us, so my Y-adapter 50/240 shore to 2 x 30/120 because that what is mostly available everywhere.

No..I dont think so...it looks like 165AY is all 50amp. If you need two 30amp 125v for the boat. Then you need Male 50amp 250v for the shore power and split to 2 - 30amp female to plug your 2 shore cables into
Ohh you are correct sir. I've been looking at this on my phone, I missed that the 165AY is all 50. The older (NON Ell version) is 153AY

Easier way to ask this is to add a Honda eu2000 to your swim platform and take a picture with an extension cord plugged into an outlet.

You will get a bunch of responses. I have a 50 amp to two 30 amp splitter and will never need it. Figure out what you want to do and I am happy to make you a deal for it cheap. :)

What is the real world difference between these adapters? It appears to me one only does 125v and the other does 125v and 250v. Is there any reason not to get the one that does both? I want this adapter because I know eventually I will want to use a transient slip with only 50 amp and will need an adapter and want to buy before I have to pay though the nose at some marina that doubles prices on this stuff.

Do you have two 50 amp lines/shore power inlets going in to your boat?
My boat has two 30 amp ones.
I carry both (50/125 - 2 30’s & 50/125/250 - 2 30’s) (top two in Jaybeaux’ graphic) because we have a few places around here (National Park Marinas) that have the 50/125.
The other places that have 50 amp service all have the 125/250.
I’ve also got a double 30 to single 30 (#4 in that same graphic) aboard in case there is only access to one 30 amp, and a couple of 30 - 15 pigtails in case I go to Flintstone’s Marina.
Plus a couple of more to cover every possible situation.
Too many adapters for sure but better than not having electricity.

It is not too common for for marinas to have the 125/50 plugs. Years ago, maybe it was "a thing"....but most have the 250v.

If you need an adapter, my odds are with the 165AY

Around here on Long Island (south shore) we refer the 50/125 as to the Watch Hill adapter...........

So which model is the proper adapter for Watch Hill now?
