Boat Flooded, serious issue...

If the plugs were out water had to go in from there and through an open valve i would say:( I wood try loading the Cylinders up with oil , let sit for a couple days then try to turn over by hand so you don't bend a pushrod

You mean connecting rod.

Update: So my neighbour referred me to the local marina who are honest folk. They changed out the spark plugs, didn't notice any water, changed the oil, got the boat started and ran it for quite a while with no issues.

Miraculously there was no damage he said after a full inspection.

New update...: When I made it up to the cottage to start the boat, it turned over for about 2 seconds... and then it wouldn't turn over at all and i just heard the starter make a click sound every time i would try and turn the key. Tested the batteries and batteries are completely fine.

I have a feeling these marina mechanic's aren't that honest (surprise!) and didn't get it running, knowing the starter was bad. So he came by and said I need a new starter, which i do believe it needs, given the age of the boat. Not sure why they couldn't just tell me that to begin with.

Also, I noticed the water from the flood reached the top of the starter. You can see in the photo from the water stain on the carpet how high it went. They want to charge $700 CAD for the starter replacement ($300/400 for the starter, $250/hr labor)... It feels like robbery!

Given how high the water went, is there anything else you guys think damaged and needs to be replaced? I'm thinking the alternator...

A marine starter is NOT that much even in Canada.
Find someone else or get a border crosser to repair it at a more reasonable price
Being a low mount alt it`s possible but you wont know until its running .Another item is the drive. If water got high enough it would enter the main bellow .Might not be a bad idea to pull the drive for inspection.

To replace the starter you may have to remove the exaust manifold for better access to the starter bolts, that night explain any extra labor costs but NOT at $250/hr

These mechanic's charge ridiculous fees where we are because it's basically Canada's version of the "Hamptons"... I'm inquiring another marina in Toronto that is pretty good for prices on the parts and just getting a neighbour of mine to do it if he can.

Cancelled the Marina... Just ridiculous pricing.

My neighbour is going to take the starter to be tested. I've called a few placed and all the starters were around $400 OEM. Will go with a new one if the rebuild costs more than $300.

you can do the labor, not that difficult

I would pull the spark plugs again and try and turn it over with the plugs out. It is most likely the starter but we've already seen the local marina is les than reputable. Perhaps they did get all the water out of the cylinders.

If water got into the starter. It would work for a few days. But then its toast.

For the aggravation it takes to replace a starter on most boats, I think I would stick with OEM or Sierra. I have found the folks below to be pretty good, have order a lot of parts from them over the years. Good service if you call and good prices.

Ok, I think I'm just gonna buy a new one. It's next day shipping so I will have it in time to install for the long weekend...

Based on the pictures I sent above, it looks pretty hard to reach.

Can someone let me know how I should go about uninstalling and installing? I might want to try myself otherwise it won't be installed for a couple weeks likely.

It's a suck job anyway you look at it, notice how the stringer is right in the way. No doubt that manifold will have to come off

Make sure it is a starter problem and not a bad slave, cable or connection first.
