I may be in some doo-doo here. VIN issue...

Well here is where I'm at:
  • He can't find the tag.
  • We can't find the VIN.
  • He can't find the title.
  • There in no insurance requirement in GA for trailers.
  • They can't find it in his records under his, nor his wife's drivers' license numbers.
  • His original bill of sale has no VIN listed.

I almost had the tag office ready to issue a fresh VIN plate as if it were a home made trailer, but when I went back with the law enforcement VIN inspection stating it didn't have a VIN plate affixed, the rep at the counter stated I couldn't do this process for this kind of trailer.

My doo-doo just seems to get deeper. :( The good news I just submitted for the boats registration today. Yay! I just registered my first boat! Boooooo!!!! I wont be able to trailer it home!

ETA:
Just as a by-the-way; I'm a police officer and my buddy is a co-worker! And here I sit trapped in the same circle of bureaucratic red tape that people get stuck in and feel like they can't ever get out.
Here in NH, an officer came out to inspect the trailer and signed a form that allowed me to get a VIN sticker from the state. I love NH !!

My step-son is a police officer so I just had him sign my form. Call your DMV and ask them what you need to do. I went to 2 notaries (1 twice) and neither could tell me what I needed to do or the process. All they could tell me was I didn't have what I needed. The DMV was the ones that told me to download the form from their site and complete it.

Glocker, where are you in Georgia. I am in Hall County and have a friend at the tag/tax department that can help you. I was surprised to find my trailer for my waverunner didn't have a vin number. I contacted the manufacturer, they gave me a certificate of origin and I was able to help out the second owner who was having a hard time registering in Canada. If you want to go to Hall Co, I can help.
EZ Loader has a policy of only helping people with documentation issues if the trailer is 2 years old or newer and you are the first owner. They are VERY unhelpful on the phone. In fact, I was told I may just have to buy a new trailer. I am beyond frustrated at this point. I hot, dirty, and tired. I went out twice to crawl over this trailer looking for ANYTHING that could help me.

My buddy and I went out and looked at the trailer today. We can't find any hint of a VIN. He told me he never tagged the thing; it went right from the dealership to the marina where the boat was either wet slipped or dry stacked the whole time he owned it.

I was told I can't get a homemade trailer VIN assigned; they request documentation of the build with receipts.

I called EZ Loader; they were very unhelpful on the phone. I was told I may have to buy a new trailer.

There is a process for everything in a State. You just need to contact the right person.

Start by sending a thoughtful, factual letter to whoever is in charge of the Department that issues Tags & Titles in your State. This isn’t the first time this has happened and they will respond and also copy your State representative.

I may have to go this route.

I reached out to the state tax office that handles these issues. It became immediately clear she didn't read my email describing my issue with a boat trailer, and she referred me to the state's Department of Natural Resources for BOAT REGISTRATION.

I responded to her reply clarifying my issue, and she sent me a form for a replacement VIN tag and the form requires I have documentation of the VIN!!!!! She still didn't read my email!!!!

I AM SO DAMN FRUSTRATED RIGHT NOW!

Sometimes that process requires the citizen to fudge things unfortunately because beurocracies are very black and white with little to no wiggle room for circumstances that dont match the little box that pencil pushers tick

Have a boat drink and relax. This may be the only time in your life that you have a chance to use the political process......to actually help solve this.

Take my advice and send a letter. Copy your State representative and see how fast they respond. The quality of your letter matters and you are seeking their help. You have nothing to lose and oftentimes the States reps love problems like this because they can be solved with a single phone call.

Go light on the people doing their jobs....they are supposed to follow the script.

I agree I don't think it will be as difficult as it sounds. Just need to get in touch with the right people. Took me 2 years to get mine transferred and titled but mostly due to me dragging my feet but once I talked to the right people it only took about 3 weeks from there.
