Well who would have thought here in 2019 that we can't expect to have electricity service if the wind is forecasted to blow over 20 miles and hour! later tonight PG&E will shut down the power grid that serves almost a million customers to avoid wild fires.
Our brave Governor is on TV, slamming the utility as being greedy and putting profits over their duty to provide reliable and safe power to the population. Slamming the same people that likely contributed to his campaign getting him into office.
PG&E has had their hands tied not allowed to clear cut the trees away from their transmission lines by the Damn tree huggers and idiots more worried about a few spotted owls than responsible forest management.
We have calls for breaking up the utility or having the state take over the grid. Great Idea, government would do a much better job!! Give us a break!
I'm glad we have our 44 as part of our emergency plan. Heading there today to chill "off the grid".

What has changed out there? They've never had high winds, or dry conditions before?
Last Two years we lost over 60,000 homes to wild fires impart to old equipment that came down during high wind events. Our PUC which is a joke, has been lax in mandating equipment replacement so the aging infrastructure is failing more and more. Add in the environmental wackadoos that get injunctions against any meaningful Forrest management and it’s a perfect storm. It’s our new normal. PG&E is in Bankruptcy already so unless the CA taxpayers bail them out they have a great excuse for not investing further in the infrastructure.
At least we can boat year round here and just hose off the ash!!!

We heard the same story from officials in all of the California national parks we visited last fall. Lack of forest management and actually fire prevention as well, has created tremendous amounts of fuel that makes these fire events so severe now. It's so sad to see the devastation of residential areas. When Californians tire of that scene, we have ample water and boating opportunities here in the Great Lakes...but you will have to winterize.

They do have four seasons.....Earthquakes, riots, fires and mudslides.

Man, that's terrible. I guess I'll always keep my flashlight in my pocket. How's it going, guys? I really hope you are doing great. Tbh, I've always wanted to visit CA, and I still want to do it. My kids have never been there, so now we're trying to plan the best time for our trip. I'd highly appreciate any of your suggestions on that. We're great fans of camping. We even have a tradition of going camping each season. And this fall, we have still not gone camping cause we're currently planning this trip. It's going to be special, actually. It will be the first trip ever when we take our daughter with us. Hope she will like it. She's already asked me to buy this flashlight https://www.amazon.com/Vont-Flashlight-Flashlights-Water-Resistant-Accessories/dp/B089T8HDBV. She has a fear of darkness. Anyway, I'll be waiting for your replies, guys. TIA
Unless you are a looney leftest tree hugger with your preferred pronouns already picked out, save your money and your Kids sense of self worth and go camping in Idaho or Montana or in the Smokey Mountains. There is nature to enjoy everywhere and Ca really ain’t all that unique after all. LA and SF have become toilets and the rest of Ca is trees and ocean views you can enjoy just about anywhere else.
Cheers

I want to go back to Sonoma, Carneros and Napa. But I don't want to go through the shit hole that is San Francisco to get there. I guess I could fly into San Jose.

The rest of the states in the great country work hard in forestry to preserve their forest. Then you have State California has figured out a way to benefit from letting it burn and not taking care of their forests. Can't blame PG&E for doing what they do because they are not permitted to clear cut their the land near their power lines.

Fly into Sacramento and avoid the Bay Area altogether. You will be about an hour and twenty minutes from Napa and another 1/2 an hour from Sonoma. One nice thing about the snobby wine country region, they don't tolerate homeless junkies camping. There is a small camp in the middle of Napa on the river bank but that is about it.

That's a much better option. Last time we were there we stayed in a cottage at the Carneros Inn. It was about $200/night. Just checked and it is more like $800/night. Place is nice, but I think I'll find another option.

After Covid it seems many of the accommodations have gone thru the roof but they charge what the market will bear. Many wineries now charge $25 to even $100 to taste a flight of their wines now. They are cutting way back on catering to the partyers drinking on the winery's dime and welcoming people with $$ who want to actually buy wine. Apparently it is working because they all are doing it. It does make for a more pleasant tasting experience with out the bachelorette party competing for space at the tasting counter!

My son is leaving Santa Maria Friday, moving to Tempe AZ. I think he’s nuts going from 75 every day to 110. But he’s excited and cost of living is way less.
He told me there is so many things to do compared to SM.
Well no shit Sherlock, you moved from the DC / NY corridor to a podunk little town like SM.
Ever since he moved I read the Santa Maria Times online. The highlights are fender benders and Friday night high school games.

I'm thinking that's a spammer. There's no way I'd click on that link.

Looked it up "safely" (I hope).

I've been carrying one of these since 2012 with 100% satisfaction.

Yes, initial outlay may be steep, but after 10 years of nearly daily use it comes out to 12 CENTS per day.
