The Pendulum Is Still Swinging, and it scares me.

In my lifetime we’ve had our armed forces return home from a variety of conflicts around the world. When they came home from WWII they were welcomed home as heroes. They were treated to ticker tape parades, marching bands and were treated like the conquering heroes they were.

The next major conflict our armed forces came home from was Korea. Korean War soldiers returned home to a population that was largely disinterested in the war effort. They were not welcomed like the soldiers that came before them.

This, IMHO, was the beginning of the pendulum swing, and it is continuing.

When the Vietnam Vets returned they were hated, spit on, called names such as “Baby Killers” and other vile names. The pendulum of lack of respect for our troops had swung further.

In the recent wars in the desert the pendulum has continued to swing and returning troops were despised. Groups organized protests to show their hatred for everything associated with the military.

Now it appears this hatred has spread to the police. Anti-police riots have taken place in cities across the country, some in retaliation for killings of black people by white cops. The pendulum has continued to swing and this hatred now includes police as well as the military.

Yesterday, in NYC an anti-police riot took place to protest police enforcing the laws against people jumping the turnstiles instead of paying fares. Rioters ran into the subway, jumped the turnstiles instead of paying the tolls and were physically attacking the police. Here’s a link to an article about this recent riot.

https://pjmedia.com/trending/protesters-threaten-police-during-new-york-city-subway-protest-in-brooklyn/

So where will this pendulum swing end? Will the ANTIFA and similar groups continue their anti-government protests and riots? Most likely. Along the I-5 corridor that runs N-S from Vancouver, BC through Seattle and down into Portland and other towns in Oregon, these riots have turned violent.

How can we control this swinging pendulum and where will it end?

What say you?

Please keep the discussion civil and not make it a Democrats vs Republicans issue.

I think the only pendulum you speak about is that of the liberal media. They determine the news and how it's portrayed. I think the average citizen respects both the military and the police. Problem is we are too busy working and raising families to "protest."

"Please keep the discussion civil and not make it a Democrats vs Republicans issue"

Then you are not going to get the whole answer. I am painting right now... beer break. so quickly... This younger generation is being taught in school and learning from each other that this is an entitled society. When you think this way you get what ever you want and that includes not paying fares and not to have to listen to police.

A pendulum reveals optimism that things will turn around at some point. I think I would instead characterize this as a downward spiral. Guess I'm just more pessimistic.

The problem in NYC is the current Mayor and City Council. The message the public gets about their rights is not a complete one.
Lots of talk about rights they do have but they aren’t told that they don’t have the right to resist arrest, interfere with an arrest, raise their hands to a cop (or anyone else for that matter) or destroy property to make their point.
A good leader would be doing PSA’s reminding the public about what they shouldn’t do when interacting with the police.
A spineless Police Commissioner isn’t helping either.
The result is a shift from proactive policing to reactive policing.
Most of the people involved weren’t born yet when that dynamic happened the last time in NYC.
I lived it and it wasn’t pretty.
Reactive policing does not work! More importantly, it’s a culture and mindset that is extremely difficult to reverse.
When I saw the pictures and videos from the other night the first thing that came to my mind was that those morons don’t understand that before the shift in NYC back to proactive policing a generation ago, the neighborhoods that a great portion of them are living in now were urban war zones that they wouldn’t have been able to inhabit.
If things don’t change quickly, those neighborhoods will once again become battlegrounds and they’ll have to move back to the flyover states they came from.

My wife is a teacher. She just told me tonight that there isa petition going around a local school for kids to have the day after Halloween off. Shealso said many kids in her school have IEP's. One has an IEP that says she can have her phone at any time and it cannot be taken from her. Another says she will not have n assigned seat and can sit wherever she wants and can also get up and leave anytime she wants. They had 2 incidents in the last few weeks of girls screaming and swearing. The one was suspended for 2 days. The other slammed the classroom door so hard my wife thought the glass would break. She got no punishment because she had an IEP. The majority of these kids have nothing wrong with them, they just want special treatment and they get it. As long as this stuff goes on then entitlement will be expected.

What is a IEP?

What is a IEP?
The IEP, Individualized Education Program, is a written document that's developed for each public school child who is eligible for special education. The IEP is created through a team effort and reviewed at least once a year. Before an IEP can be written, your child must be eligible for special education.

I couldn't of said it any better, You took the words right out of my mouth

Our education system is failing because they were stupid enough to start receiving federal money so now the State has no say so what goes on in their schools.

Oh, you mean like Chicago?

Maybe even worse!
Having lived in NYC for the first 41 years of my life and working there most of my adult life, I can vividly remember how middle class neighborhoods changed seemingly overnight to war zones with blocks of buildings that landlords walked away from.
Even portions of Midtown Manhattan became a dark depressed area as the slime of Times Square spread out and roaming groups of feral youth preyed upon the weaker.
Back to back summers of riots and an all time high homicide rate in the early 1990’s convinced the liberal city that an aggressive Mayor and proactive PD were the only way out.
The term “law and order liberals” was born to describe people who leaned left until they were personally touched by crime.
Things had changed so much in the decade that followed that Times Square became like Disney while uptown and outer borough war zones transformed to magnets for young people from around the country to move to.
The term “urban pioneers” was coined to described these otherwise clueless new arrivals.
Along came DeBlasio who demonized the police to get elected and then he appointed the most shamelessly political figure in modern policing to return as Commissioner. That Commissioner moved on when his instinct told him he had milked things as much as he could and he was replaced by one of his flunkies.
The result is a swing back to reactive policing.
It’s a recipe for disaster.
Now you have the transplants who could not have moved here if it were not for proactive policing out there rioting in protest against law enforcement.
Dumb!

Good luck with keeping politics out of it GFC, just ask anyone on here, "It's all the liberals fault" LOL

IEP's are interesting documents. Last year I became a substitute school bus driver for the district I live in.

I now only sub on Special Ed (SPED) busses, somewhat for selfish reasons. I found that when you're a sub you always are subbing on different routes so you never get to know the route or the kids. When I was on General Ed busses I would have to drive with my route sheet in one hand, reading it while navigating this 40' bus through city traffic. That has to be the extreme example of distracted driving and scares me because if I'm involved in an accident while driving/reading, it's my fault.

With a SPED bus I have an aide on the bus with me. She knows the route and can give me turn-by-turn instructions on where to go and instructions on where the next stop is to pick up or drop off kids.

On the SPED busses are copies of the SPED students' IEP's. I've read through a few of them and the special treatment these kids get simply amazes me. Don't get me wrong, many/most need these special treatments but I've encountered a few along the way that are simply milking the system.

yep. I'm all for IEP's where they are needed but like I posted, a kid has an IEP saying they cannot have their phone taken from them and can have it out when they want? So what disorder does that help? Too many snowflakes today wanting everything without having to earn it. I have busted my butt and earned everything I have. My mother was a single parent and raised me to understand the value of a dollar. My father was a steel mill worker that spent his money on beer, fast cars and faster women and rarely paid child support. My mother made minimum wage and raised me by herself with absolutely 0 public assistance (I didn't even get free/reduced lunches because I begged my mom not to make me get them as we had to stand in a different line and everybody would know we were poor). She worked hard and got her real estate license when I was about 11 and worked her way to a better life for us. She now has a very nice house that is paid for and is retired (when I moved out at 18 she still lived in the run down house I grew up in). Back then you had to work to pay bills. As far as I can recall public assistance was temporary so you had no choice. Today it's a career/lifestyle

Boatman therein lies one of the biggest problems with today's "I want it all and I want it now" society.

Nobody wants to work for anything any more. I left home at 15, never been unemployed, never been on welfare or assistance of any kind. I recognize that many people are in bad situations through no fault of their own.

OTOH, many choose that lifestyle.

Unfortunately many don't know any better. They do know how to game the system though.

I have commented on this in the past... I don't see racism or disrespect for anyone what so ever in my everyday world. I have a place in Indy, another just outside of Detroit and the boat in Ohio...nothing... Actually the opposite... Hell in Detroit in rush hour traffic... no one honks...and people deserve to be honked at, yet nothing.... Still don't understand that :).... The only time I see racism, disrespect for the country and flag, protesting democracy, white supremacy and threats to our constitution is when I turn on the TV.
So we are back to the liberal big cities... And again it's the minority making the headlines not the majority and the media blowing it up into fake news

Geez.... Now I am quoting my own posts.... I said this earlier and while painting late on a Sunday afternoon... Just to add... take an entitled kid and that generation and what they are being taught and add a media that is saying the current administration is corrupt, racist, impeachable, evil, a white supremace and conspiring with Russians ..... It's going to fuel a fire.
