40 sedan bridge forum

Anything local to get to the highways ie wires ETC is 13.5. That is in MA. Might vary state by state.

I need to replace the anchor on our DB40. The current delta is bent and really doesn't set very well, which caused a bit of a dragging experience this past weekend, and a reset at 2:45am.

I am looking at a Mantus or Rocna in a 35lb or 45lb, and increasing the chain rode to 100' from 25'. I also need to get a stern/emergency anchor and think a Fortress 15.

Anyone use either of those anchors and if so, your experience with them? All inputs welcomed!

As an update for anyone that's considering something similar; The Mantus M1 44lb anchor fits the bow roller without modification nicely.

As an aside, when I removed the old delta, it was pretty mangled, one of the leaves was bent and also the shank was about 20 degrees off vertical. I am sure that had something to do with the reset failures...

I now have the Mantus, 210 feet of chain and 100' of line. As a backup, I picked up Fortress (23) with 10' chain and 150' of line. Hopefully, this will fix my anchor drag issues.

I have the fortress 23 as a spare also. It's never been in the water, but the smaller fortress that I use for a stern anchor does a good job in most bottoms, so I hope the big one will also if ever called upon.
Those Mantus anchors get high praise from the cruisers that we have met that have them.

Where do you all buy these Mantus and Rochna anchors?

I got the Mantus through West Marine. But there do seem to be a whole pile of folks reselling them online...or you can always go to the MFR's website. It just happened that West Marine had the best price and special incentive going on at the same time.

I got my Rocna at Defender’s spring sale a few years ago. We usually go there, fill up the car with stuff and visit the area for the weekend.

Which is only a few minutes from our yacht club. Although I usually try to avoid that spring sale because, A) it's super-crowded, and B) I end up buying a bunch of stuff that I didn't go there for but "needed" once I was there. :/

Has Anyone redone the packing in their rudder stuffing boxes? Mine had a steady flow by the end of the season so I need to get it done. If so how much of a job is it to get to? What was the easiest way to get to them? do you have to pull of the exhaust system, or it there a trick to getting back there?

Looking at doing mine now....it looks like I have to release and pivot the generator from side to side to get in there at least. It seems like the exhaust should be far enough out of the way to not have to worry.

I can get to mine to adjust them, have twice since owning it. But adjusting and replacing packing is not the same. Bill (ZZ13) has done his. maybe he can give you some tips.

For those of you with 400 dbs with cat diesels, have you had issues with the HEUI system? Thanks.

FOr starboard side I removed generator battery and disconnected generator muffler exhaust hose at muffler and moved it out of the way. For port side I removed the two port batteries. They end up being one armed projects. My packing was pretty far gone so I didn't remove the old stuff. I just added two rings of 1/4" to each side. That was 5 years ago and still dry.

The starboard side explanation may have been for a different project. I may not have had to move anything to reach in and get at that nut. I'm not sure. I'll double check when I am on the boat today.

I found my original post. I did remove the generator battery, but not the muffler hose. Sorry about the confusion.

Thank you so much for the info. I think I will have to pull the exhaust hose because I installed a secondary muffler inline and it will now be in the way. but you had no trouble with the trim pump? I am a smaller guy so I figured I could shimmy in but wanted to make sure I had the correct packing material size and tools and sandwich in case I get suck in there for a while! :)

I got in there fine. I am 5' 10" 165 lbs with broad shoulders. My original post says the diameter is 6". Of course I meant the circumference.

If interested i have a 2004 400SB that i am hauling out on the 6th at Bayline Marine in New Bedford. I just saw your response. Id like to connect with you if possible maybe yale a look at your boat if that's ok.

New favorite toy. A sensor push temp and humidity monitor that runs off of wifi and bluetooth. The wifi gateway allows for remote monitoring, and bluetooth while away from the dock and underway. You can add endless sensors that are battery powered. I'll drop one in the salon, my engine room, and for now my anchor locker where my most exposed water line is until I winterize the water system. Ill later move that one to the flybridge or something to track outside conditions from home. I may drop one in the refrigerator during the season, because I never trust that the power hasn't gone off at some point during the week for food that could spoil. I like the idea of monitoring my engine room temps while tied up with no air flow and running the genny on a hot day. I've used the cheaper Lacrosse versions for years, but this is loads better.
