420 DA Thread

I started investigating putting a dinghy on the swim platform. I don't have a hydraulic lift, so I am looking at a Hurley H30. I am starting to second guess the size of the dinghy. I want 10'-2" x 5'-8" but starting to think it might be too big or not look right.
Can any of you tell me what size you have and any pictures of the stern with the dingy on the davit would be appreciated.

Different boat but beam is close and my platform is not as wide as yours. I have a 9.5' Highfield and like it a lot. We have taken it all over, thousands of miles, no problems at all from size perspective or otherwise. So much so that the next one will be the 10'-2". In the beginning I was concerned about the length also. With all of the locks and unfamiliar docks and marinas that we would be transiting to and through, I was afraid of the outboard being to close to the width of the boat if I got a little squirrely and dinging something up. Now, after having this one for 4 years, I don't see any reason it would be a problem going to the bigger one. If I can find a few pictures, I'll edit them in.

Here's a few pictures. Can't help with how it would look on a sundancer, but you can get the idea of width from center and both sides. BTW, our boat is 14'-3" beam. Adding 4" to each end of the dinghy isn't going to matter much in our case.

I want to get the 310 also. I think it would fit OK but I keep going round and round on which davit. I actually like the St Croix style to free up the swim platform. I wonder how it'll hold up without some kind of stabilization between it and the boat(where the shore power hookup/storage are). That would block off the swim platform.

I also wonder about it in rough seas. Sometimes in beam seas going gunnel to gunnel on every wave for hours. I don't know....I've no experience with any type of davit, they're where I'm hung up.

Do you remember CSR member Bresco? I think he tried a couple different davits on his 44DA. I've found his blog, he really did a good job on it, it has hundreds of pictures. I'm going to look through them this weekend and see what he had. http://www.lapointes.ca/blog/

I am with you...there doesn't seem to be a davit out there that is perfect...each one has compromise's.
I don't remember Bresco...I just looked at his Blog... I am going to spend sometime there for sure as he has done some stuff I would like to do.

I have the H30 with the 9'6" Highfield RIB. In the pic below you can see I have good access to the platform on the port side, and I can walk (sideways) between the dinghy and the transom. I setup my H30 so the keel sits right over the lip of the platform.

I purchased the H30 electric winch, it works fine but is not really needed. When I am too lazy to pull it out I just pull the dinghy up by hand.

I wanted the 10'6" RIB, but that extra foot plus the extra beam take up the entire platform.

Wow Thanks ...that is exactly what I was looking for... It looks good sitting there.

The specs show the 290 at 9'-6' x 5'-8", The 310 is 10'-2" x 5'-8"... Do you think the 8" in length would make that big a difference?. Is your dinghy 5'-8" wide?

Pretty sure mine is 5'-4" or 5-6" wide, if they were the same width I would have gone up to the 310 as that was the one I really wanted.

That said, it depends on how you get on and off your boat regularly, for us yes I think that 8" extra length would get annoying as it all has to go towards the port side - the bow is already sticking out as far as I feel comfortable on the starboard side.

These are some pics of my new dinghy it is 11ft 5 inches it is bigger than expected but it fits.

I talked to Sealift... They are up to $29k for a single ram no chocks or installation.

Is that the whole platform? 2 years ago I got a price of 19K for the cradle type, no installation or shipping.
Yes with a swim platform like case closed above.. I heard $22k earlier this summer. I talked to them last week and he said $29k ...no chocks ..no installation.. No freight.. I asked if there was anyone around me to install and didn't get a good answer but I could bring their guy up.
That's why the Hurley 30 and a smaller kingfield by the looks of things.. The way we would use or need the dinghy, the Sealift is just too much money to throw away.

How, that’s a big increase, I paid 19k three years ago, 1,200.00 to ship up to Michigan, 3k to have my local marina install. My marina tried to convince me to buy the brands of lifts they sold, now they recommend SeaLift, they keep telling me what a great lift and easy to install. Would I do it again for 30k+, yes! Now that we have a hydraulic lift, I could not live without.

If it was my forever boat I would do it for sure, but I see us with this boat maybe 2 or 3 more years then go to something bigger with a factory lift.

My Sealift was 25k installed in 2017. We will see how much it is to repair it in 2019... For those that didn't see my other thread, a bad storm hit over Halloween and our harbor had 4' waves coming in from the south. I happen to be facing directly south at the end of the dock, so they were crashing over my platform and filling my dinghy, which couldn't drain fast enough. Sure wish i had turned the boat around so the bow was into the waves. The wind was supposed to be coming from the west according to the weather men. WRONG. I blame them.... not really, i should have known they don't know what they're talking about.... I guess i'm better off than some of the other boats at my marina. A center console across from me sank, and Grady with twin 300's on the back sustained engine and mount damage, two sailboats lost their biminis.. Pretty crazy for being in a harbor on what was forecasted to be a relative non-event.
As much as i'm irritated that multiple parts bent on the lift, it may have actually been a good thing as it likely prevented damage to the transom.

Interested to hear the repair costs as well. Had our highfield dink fill up with water during rough seas on our 320 once. Scared the crap out of me didn't even want to step on the platform to get it drained. Its amazing how much weight it adds. Which marina was this thats so exposed?

It is Mystic Shipyard. Pretty far up the river, but does have a line of sight to Fishers sound from the end of the most southerly dock. It was a freak event.

Have stayed there a few times. Never knew it could get that bad in there. Even in extreme conditions. Hopefully you get it squared away over the winter. Good luck!

Thanks. I just heard back from Sealift. After sending them the pictures and videos their assessment is the lift needs to be replaced. They think there is too much risk that other bracketry may be bent and out of alignment where it would not work reliably. $15,800 for a new lift. This does not include the pump, the actual platform, or any labor. So it does sound like prices went up from 2017.

Wow sorry to hear about your lift damage.Should be covered by your insurance.I will say having a lift makes our whole boating experience much more enjoyable not having to struggle with the dinghy launch and retrieval.
