Sedan Bridge Common Drain Plumbing

But, it seems the sump pumps it's contents into the common drain....

Tom,
Thanks for documenting your investigation and modification. Great info...I can’t think of a good reason Sea Ray would route the galley sink drain all the way down to the sump only to pump it back up to the main drain which as you discovered is not that far from the galley sink drain.

On a side note.. Does your A/C raw water cooling drain on the starboard side as stated? Just curious as all three of my drain on the port side and the bridge A/C drains on the stbd.

Nice work, I already bought the thru hull to dump it out the side of the hull but I think I will follow your lead now. I was worried about “stuff” from the sink going into that drain but it was going into the sump box and then getting pumped right there so what’s the difference really.

On my boat the smooth white hoses seem to be used only for the air conditioning unit raw water supply and return. The smooth white hose going into the end of the starboard common drain (in the pic) is the MSR AC unit (I'm 95% sure; just haven't traced it all the way forward). The bridge AC unit's raw water return as well as the pan drain dumps into this starboard common drain but in the aft end of the drain (see previous post picture of behind the ice maker). The Solon and Aft AC units' raw water returns dump into the Port common drain.
The MSR, Solon, and Aft AC pan drains (clear hoses with braid) seems to route and dump into the sump; which I believe a big contributor to odor issues on these boats. This is why I keep the sump spic and span.

Finished and tested. Sink draining, sump running, and AC running - no issues. Last picture - all put back together and added a stack vent-check (allows air in but none out) where the forward bilge pump connects to ensure the drain will flow regardless of the volume in it.

Tom - in addition to being a "steely-eyed missile man", you are one heck of a plumber! - especially if butt-crack was involved in this project!

You give me too much credit Carter - Call me "pretzel man"; how do I get myself into these projects.....
Now I have to figure out how to get into that tunnel under the stateroom hallway and pull the old hose out. Shoot, while I'm down there why not replace those smelly vacuflush hoses with PVC pipe.... rescue will be one tap away on my cell phone.

On a mission.....
Was and Now. Cut in the new tee. So this PVC is 2 1/2 inch; not available at your lowes, ACE, or HD. Need to get from an irrigation specialty store or order on line.

Now that you have done all the hard work figuring out the access and way to tie the galley sink into the common drain I am going to follow suit. Do you know where you bought the irrigation fittings? Would be good to know so I get it correct the first time.

The tee and bushing were at a local PVC supply house here in my area. Here is an internet site -

Finished my Galley to Common Drain diversion today. Pretty much followed ttmott's and I's plan but included his good idea to add a vent. A few lessons learned along the way... make square cuts to the PVC, which is a challenge contorting yourself behind the freezer and cabinets. Also you have to disconnect the freezer drain hose in the laundry area before the freezer will come out. As you re-install the freezer you will want to connect a fish tape to the drain hose and push it down into the laundry area so you can pull the hose back down and reconnect.

Attached are a couple pictures of the before and after. Unfortunately I will have to wait 4 weeks or so before I can refill the tanks and test the system out. Have a few more projects between now and then to keep me busy...

Pulled all of the old Drain Hose out from the above project. It took my very helpful daughter to be able to fit. Also replaced the Master HVAC Feed Water Line. It had been patched several times by the PO. Feels good to get all those old lines out of the boat.

Nice work. It makes me feel claustrophobic just looking at the picture. I did the same project a few weeks ago. I didn’t have any extra room to add a Y fitting for the sink so I had to improvise a bit. The factory bedded the 2 1/2” pvc in a foam type Substance so it was a bear to get that dug away enough to get a new coupler on the end.

Can I borrow her to do the same and what’s with the snake!

We use the snake to keep the ducks off the swim platform... Seems to work. Lol

Good for your daughter! My middle daughter (one of my three "nutty chicks" as my friends called them) LOVED helping me with technical projects. She went into engineering and loves it.

Under the bridge steps storage is an access panel. In there I found the drain for the port engine vent drain connection. Thought I would share pictures for what it’s worth.

Went ahead and cleaned that storage area for the first time in 3yrs.

Wow. Just wow. Thank you so much Tom and Jeremy. I know I am a few years late to the 500/520DB Starboard Common Drain Party, but this may be the year that I finally pull the freezer and fix this Sea Ray design issue. My main concern is finding the correct parts and making the square cuts in such a confined space.

Also, how has this fix been over the past 3-4 years for you guys? Any unforeseen issues? Would you have done things differently? I'm sure plenty of us would love to know how the pioneers have fared.

I also tied our galley drain into the Starboard Common Drain a few years ago. It has worked perfectly so far.

I’m glad there are so many knowledgeable 500/520 owners who can help the rest of us navigate this efficient fix. I am looking forward to mapping out this process and learning along the way.
