58 Sedan Bridge Official Thread

So here is the latest chapter on the MMDS Boards and their soldered batteries that go out every 10-12 years. I lost the stbd board in 2017 and my "MAN man" said no problem, he'd change it at the annual service, which he did under the MAN "goodwill" Program. My Port board went out in August, it caused no problems other than 529,000 hours on the display. Last Friday, he called me and told me MAN was ending the "Goodwill" Program and that the boards cost $9K from MAN and $5.3K from the manufacturer. He talked me through the removal, I shipped it to him Sat Morning, he shipped it to MAN on Mon. On Wed he texted me that he had the replacement board from the "Goodwill" Program. Won't be fun for anyone when we need another one in the future...

Carter,

Just to jog your memory of days past, my Caterpillars need only one wire on the engine to make them run and no circuit boards, screens, etc.............

frank

That would be great in our case except for the fact that our boats would probably make 12 knots at WOT with your engines in them....

Next time it might be worth trying a electronics repair specialist. I run a manufacturing plant that has tons of old and outdated machine controls. It would cost us millions to update everything, only to have to do i in 10 years all over.

We use gesrepair.com on a regular basis. We ship them the bad parts and they tell us within a day if they can be repaired and for how much. Its extremely rare they cant fix something. I would think they would be able to easily find an alternative battery and replace it for in the hundreds of dollar range especially if your not in a rush.

Anybody know how to get at the light module behind the posts/columns in a 550/58 or other Sedan Bridge?

See pic

Thanks
Don’t let me ruin it for you guys... I was told Christmas tree fasteners too. However, I found out the hard way that they are actually screwed on from behind. Pry hard enough and you’ll see what I mean. Summer went by without ordering the 1/4” rope lighting so it’s on the spring punch list at this point.

FWIW I did replace the rope lighting under the vanity in the master head.
Thanks Fellas,

Just getting back to this after a summer of fun.

I assume you get at the backs of panels were the screws (not chrisms trees) are located?

Thanks Again,

Thanks, seems to be a consensus on these not working. Just looking for the easiest way to get behind the facade to undo the screws. The thing is put together like one of those Swedish wood puzzles.

Love the boat though. The ride is and handling are great.

Thanks again

I probably won’t get to this until spring. You will need to buy 1/4” rope light for each side (120v). Carefully pry off the panels, and you will see how easy it is to remove the old rope from the clips. You might need to take off the sofa back cushions to find out where they’re plugged in at. FWIW I did this in the master head a few years ago. If your rope lighting under the cabinet hasn’t gone out yet, it will. I suppose under the master berth and forward berth will go too eventually.

Thanks, and yes, I need to do the master bath as well. The master and fwd berth are good so far, but as you said it's not a matter of if, but when they will go.

Jeff - how did you solve the screw issue. If you pried it off, and that pulled out the screws, how did you re-attach them. I can feel the clips that the rope light is in...

I just put it back in position and pressed it back onto the screws thinking I would get to finishing it sooner than I did, and it actually stayed in place all summer! When I do the full repair, I plan to use either a couple of blobs of clear silicone, or heavy strength double sided tape. I used the double sided tape to put the panel back up in the MSR head when I replaced that rope light. In the head, you have to carefully pry off the panel to the right side of the mirror. It is held on with a releasable glue of some sort.

Wow, you have to take off the panel to the right of the mirror to get at the rope under lighting, (see attached markup via)?

Anyways back to the salon column, is there a way to pop off the side panels to get at the rear of the panel that's screwed in place. Basically i'm afraid to rip it off.

Thanks this is a lot of work for these silly lights.....but I'm committed.

Yes, your drawing is correct. The reason is that the rope light “dead-ends” on the left side and the power is fed from the right side. You also need to remove the panel in the back of the inside of the vanity. Once you remove the decorative panel on the right side of the mirror, you will find a secondary panel that is screwed to the cabinet frame. Take that off too. You will need to cut several zip-ties that hold all the wiring in place and access from the right of the mirror and the cavity under the vanity make all this possible.

What I’ve found on various boat projects is that you just have to keep “peeling back the layers” until you achieve the access that you need.

As they are ending their “Goodwill Program”, the MMDS board is $9K from MAN, but my dealer states he can get them from the manufacturer for $5300. I’ll read the voltage on my new battery and if I still own the boat in 10 years, I’ll try to find someone who works with circuit boards to replace it next time...
