I have a Searay 1800Le 1999. The boat has a plastic fuel tank which sits under the rear right seat. On top of the tank sits a metal (brass?) plate which has two wires which run to the fuel gauge, under the plate is some sort of gasket? The metal plate is corroded and when the fuel tank is filled to the top it leaks fuel. Is it possible to seal the plate with something or purchase a replacement. Many thanks for any guidance.

I would try replacing the gasket... you may have to make one with gasket material.

And, of course you can replace the whole sender if you can find one.

Best of luck and welcome to CSR!

That's the sending unit for the fuel gauge - you need to replace that gasket as the tank will leak there, especially when it is full. If you can't find a new gasket, you can easily buy a sheet of gasket material and make one.

The sending units and gasket are easy to get - any marine store can help you with that.

FYI, "1800LE" is NOT a Sea Ray. Also, the tank is under the PORT side rear jump seat, not the stbd (right) side. It sounds like you have a different brand of boat.

Either way, take care of this before you operate the boat - or even before you turn ANYTHING on - in the boat... to avoid an explosion. Don't even disconnect the battery. Just open the sunpad, remove the engine cover and let it breathe for a while. The use your nose and smell below the engine for fumes. If it smells clear, then turn the blower on and give it a little while. Then continue with the repair.

Thank you for your replies. As you can tell my boat knowledge is limited. I live in New Zealand so I’ll look in to finding a sending unit. I’ve removed the back jump seats and engine cover, drained some fuel and given it all a good clean up so there’s no fuel or residue left. Gasket paper is pretty easy to come by so if needed I’ll make a new one, any idea what thickness this would be originally? As for the boat it’s definitely a Sea Ray the badge is on the side. Thanks again.

Not sure on the thickness, exactly. I usually just buy a new gasket when needed. I don't think you have to be too exact with this, though. You've got the old one... measure it? Whatever "feels" right should work, though... maybe somewhere between 1/16" and an 1/8"? A little gasket sealant, while typically not necessary, can't hurt, either.

NZ... you might have one of those knock-off "Sea Ray's" we hear of once in a while. I forget the company that makes it, but it's not made by Sea Ray. Doesn't really matter for what you're doing, though. And if it gets you out there on the water, that's all that matters.

Thanks to all. Took the boat to local marine mechanic fitted new sending unit which fixed the issue many thanks for your help.
