Transient Marina planned for Navy Pier

That would be a fun place to spend a couple days/nights.

Hopefully the mayor doesn't decide the real estate has better uses and plow it under in the middle of the night like he did with Meigs Field

Im curious at to what the prices will be and if they'll offer a touch and go at a reasonable price.

If it’s going to be anything like the transient rates at places in NYC or directly across the river in NJ it will be expensive.

Here is an example of a place on the East River in Brooklyn, the place we’ve stayed at over in NJ is about the same:

That has been on the "master plan" for years. Finally getting around to it. Bet it's going to be expensive and busy. Everyone is going to take their cut.

I was down there last September looking for a friend who came down from Wisconsin by boat. I looked at that space where they are putting the marina and thought what a waste. Glad to see it’s being used. There are some okay restaurants there and town is close enough. Cab ride and you can rock that town

Wow, boaters have been asking for something like this for DECADES! Can't believe it may become a reality.

I was talking to the owner of CHE (chicago helicopter experience). He was trying to float barges over there, and do helicopter tours from the pier. Problem was, McPier (navy pier operators), the city, county, and state all wanted their cut, and since it was on the water, they all thought they had a right to part of the revenue.

He finally aborted that plan and built a spot a couple miles west of the lake.

This would be slick. I stayed at DuSable for a few nights this past summer (my first time). I was surprised by the lack of on-water access to Navy Pier.

Hopefully they'll incorporate a dinghy dock of sorts. This would be great for the folks moored close by that don't necessarily want to dock a big boat.

Expensive??? C'mon guys this is not likely a place where you're going to moor your boat for days on end and it's not likely going to be a place you go to every weekend.

It's more likely a place where you can pull up, tie up and spend the day walking around the pier or, as someone suggested, grab a cab for a ride to a local restaurant.

I'd bet most of us think nothing about dropping a hundred bucks on dinner but sqwack about $50 for overnight moorage.

If it's anything like the number posted above on the Chicago river, were talking about $45/hour for a 30 foot boat. Spend a 5 hour day and you're hit for $225. Navy pier ain't that nice.

I don't know about that ….there is another thread going on 3 pages on saving $2 on a gallon of oil :)

As a transient boater that has traveled to Chicago by boat, I think this sounds great, and hope it turns out great. We spent about a week + there and the marina situation in that area wasn't the greatest I thought. Had a reservation at DuSable that wasn't honored because the weather was rough and people couldn't leave (Although we crossed over from St Joe's just fine). So we had to take a mooring ball at Monroe and got pounded for 3 nights before we got into Dusable, and that stay wasn't so great because of the location we were at in the marina, but that can happen anywhere so no real complaint, just sounds like Chicago could use more room. New marinas in old cities usually are nice from what I have seen (Lake Erie guys think Rock-N-Dock in Cleveland)
So here's hoping for you guys out that way that it's a success.

I was going by the figures in this chart that was posted above. For my boat (58' x 5.50) it would be $319/night. While that ain't cheap I've seen higher transient fees. With their exorbitantly high fees for electrical hookups I'd just run the gen.

On the other hand, being the resident CSR Cheapskate, I'd probably take a mooring buoy or drop a hook and dinghy in.

I talked with the guys running this at the boat show tonight.

Got lots of info, but, there is still a lot that they haven't worked out yet.

I asked about a dinghy dock, and they quickly shot that down. They're talking about a flat rate for boats that dock during the day, so, why would you bring your dinghy when it'll probably cost the same as the big boat.

I mentioned all the dinghy docks in MI, and they said that those are in state run harbors, this is totally private. So, touch and goes to drop or pick up passengers probably won't be allowed either.

The first 2 docks are going to be wave breaking docks. They wanted to extend a break wall of the water filtration plant, but that was shot down.

They said they've been working on this plan since 2015. Renting the space from McPier, and collecting a mooring tax from the boaters.

He also didn't have exact figures for dockage, but said it'd be similar to the river; $50 ish per hour.

Got a cool koozie too!

That’s disappointing.... Chicago really sucks when it comes to transient boaters and that’s a shame.... The city should really do something about that
