Official 1998 Sea Ray Sundancer 290 Thread

The steering cable was one of the best things I did on the boat. Unbelievable difference. I want to do the shift cables next, my shifters are really stiff.

my winter project was to cut out the entire ‘false floor’ wood that bridges the V gap under the shower sump and cabin floor storage. I had a feeling (based on my engine room repair) that water might be under there. Sure enough, about 12oz of Black water and the wood was wet and rotten. No structural damage, but I removed it all and im glassing new wood in. I used a scope to explore the fuel tank area and even under the batteries and Genny, bone dry. I’m thinking the shower overflowed at some point

also a brand new shower sump box as part of this

Strecker25 did you pull the entire step out and the mini step between the bathroom and mid birth to get better access?

I hate that mini step
especially when I step out of the bathroom.

Do you have an over all picture of the floor while it's opened up?

I pulled the big step out, it’s like 4 screws. The small one is molded into the floor. I’ll take a pic next time I’m there

Looking for some help. I have a 2001 290 Sundancer I purchased 4 years ago. The previous owner replaced the v-berth cushions with a custom made mattress. We’re looking to restore the v-berth with the cushions. Does anyone know where I may find the cushions or someone parting out a 290?

Nice looking mattress!

You might be best to engage a local canvas shop or upholstery shop and see what they’d charge to make it all new for you.

Could someone explain what the purpuse of the metal thingy as per attached picture? =)

Maybe a bracket for a removable cupholder or the VHF handset? It's not standard issue so it's only a guess. Ask the previous owner or look around the boat for something that fits in there.

If that's for a bell, that's a really odd place to put it (actually a horrible place since it would constantly be getting bumped - even more so than a cupholder).

I 100% agree. But i have one mounted in the arch. You can see it in the picture. Weird spot but only thing i can think of.

alternator is showing 10.5 Volts, as I increase RPM Voltage drops. I removed the Alternator and had it tested and they said it was Ok. They recommended I looked over the whole boat and they seem ok.
anyone ever have this problem?

Thanks
Todd

Is it showing 10.5 at the alternator post or at a battery? If it's at the post I'd think it's either a bad ground/connection or the alt is actually bad

I had both alts go back last year at nearly the same time and the behavior was similar to yours. Low voltage but would jump up slightly at higher revs

I haven't measured it at the alternator just what the gauge is showing

I was thinking about swapping the Alt with the port eng and see what happens

Check the post - that's the real reading. My starboard gauge is 2v low at all times those things are relatively useless.

Considering replacing the risers and elbows on one of my 5.0 FWC engines as part of the sale of the boat. Two questions:
-Should I also just plan on replacing the exhaust manifold, or is that a game day decision? Manifold last repalced in 2011. My mechanic hasn't had to do that in the past.
-Any tricks to replacing the risers and elbows? I feel like I have done almost everything else myself, just not this task, yet.

I did the whole kit when we bought the boat including the manifolds. If you’re going to work through the job I’d just do the whole thing, you’ll end up having the clean the gasket surface anyways which can be a pain while it’s on the motor.

tips are - use a bolt with a head cut off or threaded rods to hold the manifold in place for you while you put in the first couple bolts. It gives you something to hang the manifold to engine gasket on as well.

my configuration required the 3” risers so I assembled riders and manifolds first then added the elbows once they were secure.

it’s a relatively easy job, take your time and clean the surfaces up and get a friend to help lift if you can
