You can probably sand off the gold plate and repolish the handle. If your intention is to replace and chuck the old ones why not give it a try???? Nothing to lose but a little time spent.

If only I could find a way to attach the balls to the old style handle shifters. Ughh...I miss the gold balls from my '99...

Nothing worse than ball envy.
