The "virus" What are your thoughts

I do not face book but my wife does, and she was saying yesterday that the loopers where talking about this on FB. What she took from it was that the Canadian health plan does not cover them when they come here as snow birds or cruisers or .. and they have to buy supplemental insurance plans and some, maybe all?? of those plans were saying basically you have x number of days to get back to Canada because they are not going to cover in this crisis. Again, it came from facebook, so...

So for a little clarity on this, I checked with the AGLCA web forum.
From 3 different sources I basically got the same answers. What varied was the amount of time that they have to get home. One said the Canadians that are in the marina with them said that they have ten days from the time it was listed as a pandemic (March 13th). Another at a different marina said they have until the end of the month. The other said their carrier extended coverage from March 23rd until April 6th to give them a little extra time.
The insurance policies say different things but the meat and potatoes is no coverage in events of war or pandemics.
On the human side of this mess, one of them said they certainly don't have time to boat home from FL, they aren't going to leave the boat and fly back to Canada because they have no dirt house, they live on their boat, and would have to stay with their children, risking bringing it into their homes after traveling, or getting it themselves from traveling. They are going to stay in FL and hope they don't get sick. Another has the same problem, but they are going to fly back and stay with the kids because getting sick without insurance would wipe them out.
These poor people. Who would have ever thought of such a mess could come about when they headed south.

Charlotte is talking about ordering "shelter in place." Apparently the county health director believe she has authority to order this without approval from the governor or local elected government. There will be an uproar if some appointed civil servant shuts down the city.

We have a condo in AZ that we put on Airbnb. There is a couple in there from Edmonton who are leaving today, 2 weeks early, so they can get back home. They asked for a refund of half their cost due to the circumstances.

Done without question.
Good of you.

I’ll be changing my vacation plans but not abandoning completely.

We’ll drive vs fly. Stay at an Airbnb vs public hotel, and hang out at the pool and grill at home, and go to the beach. The boat will have to stay in storage...at least I won’t have to flush the salt away.

Good friends are staying in their camper in Florida.

Talked to them yesterday. They said they are doing well but will soon have the trailer park to themselves. A lot of the people there are from Canada, especially Quebec. I guess the Canadian government told all their citizens that in case of sickness they had to be in their own country in order to receive their government health care. They have to go back immediately.

If my information is wrong please correct me.

Not sure about other provinces in Canada but where I'm from (Ontario) the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) doesn't cover ANYTHING out of country - period. You need private coverage if out of the country or face the financial consequences - which is a very significant risk.

Private Insurers can of course set their own rules. Some will provide COVID19 coverage while others will not. Mine provides 60 continuous days coverage out of country and will include virus coverage. If one wishes to stay longer than 60 days you can purchase additional days of coverage BUT if you called to add coverage after March 13 (when Trudeau "suggested" Canadians return home) the provider clearly states there will be NO COVERAGE for the virus for the extension days you purchase! No thanks.

A friend from home with a different provider thought it wise to head down to FL on March 14th. He drove. His wife flew and met him in FL. Once at their expensive beach front rental in Naples they got a message from their provider that they would only cover the virus until Mar 23 (10 days from the 13th) after which time no COVID19 coverage but all their other coverage remains intact. They decided to drive back to Canada before the coverage ran out. I don't think there was any refund from their rental. Expensive long weekend...

I've already commented about insurance coverage on this post so I won't repeat myself.

As a Canadian, if I were in the position of living on my boat I would definitely not remain in the USA without health coverage. That is a recipe for financial disaster. I'd have the boat hauled/stored in a hurricane safe area, fly back, and stay in a hotel for 2 weeks if I couldn't arrange other accommodations (apt rental or air b/b come to mind). You may even want or need to continue living in the rental spot after the 2 weeks if you don't want to burden your kids with your presence. Once past the 2week quarantine you'd be just a likely to infect other family members as they are to infect you. At least back in Canada you'd not be facing personal bankruptsy should you contract the virus and need medical assistance. Why would these Canadians stay south without coverage??

Went to the grocery store today. Crowded but well stocked. Had most everything. Even TP with a limit.

I would think for the cost of storing boat
And travel home it would be cheaper to buy extended coverage for travel. If not screw the 54% tax rate I have seen posted on this forum.
Glad I am a American.

LOL ..If you pay a 54% tax rate (or anything remotely close to that) in Canada, you need to fire your accountant. Glad you're happy to be American.

Absolutely sir!

If you'd loiter around the Apostle's more this Summer Woody, maybe we can bump elbows. I have another buddy with an Amberjack who lives in Bayfield we raft off with at times. He just retired and makes a mean Old Fashioned. Me, I'm more of a beer man.
I was just told today that the virus has found Bayfield. One case, a person that had been out in CA for few days apparently picked it up while there. I was going up to the boat tomorrow for a couple days. I think I'll postpone that...I found out the storage building owner just got back from FL last weekend. I think I'll wait at least another week to make sure he's not 'hot'. The bug has made it's way to the northwoods,......here we go.:(

The beaches down here are closing hand over fist. Anyone still think this is a HOAX?? Be safe out there people....

Guys. New York has a problem. A big problem. As of tonight they have over 5000 cases. That’s 40% of all US cases.
