Hi all,

I am interested in adding a retractable Sureshade electric sun shade to the arch on my 2003 320 Sundancer. I am curious to see if any one else has done this and what their thoughts are on such an add-on.

Hope you are all staying safe and healthy!

thanks,
Kevin

While it is not the Sureshade we are working on removable fly shade for cockpit shade. I just posted about this on another thread. Our initial plans were to have it available by now for the 340SDA and 320DA however the Covid-19 virus had other plans for us.

This is a what we are looking at so far with the 340SDA:

The 320DA will be similar when available.

Hi Kevin,
Thanks for getting back to me! I am definitely interested in what you are coming up with. Any idea what you'll ask ($$) for it? What is the name of your company?

Just sharing. I grew up on Long Island (Hicksville). We moved to Virginia in 1992 after my parents were relocated here (my dad worked for Mobile Oil). They moved back to Jamesport after my dad retired and left us stranded here! His dream was to buy a boat on put it on the Peconic Bay (which he did). My daughter has since taken ownership of his boat, and we bought the 320 last year. She is in the water and we are getting some good practice runs in for now.

My marine company is Cove Marine (see my signatures) and we are sponsors of the CSR site (see our banner ads). We are also a distributor for Great Lakes Boat Top and we have been running a CSR discount for members.

I have been holding off on announcing a price as we wanted to get through a complete beginning-to-end production to associate a labor cost with the materials.

We are just a jump from where you grew up in Hicksville as our office is in Plainview - sometimes I wish my family stranded us someplace else ;)

I looked into it a couple years ago. Doable but expensive and somewhat clunky looking imo for the model you would need. I ended up doing a one piece bimini with a slightly modified frame for better side access. There are also some nice cantilevered designs that look good. I've been happy since I am not a sun worshiper anymore.

We had a similar setup on our 320 and loved it. My only wish is that we had gone with the telescoping poles instead of the rigid poles. This would help with storage and in case of rain you could lower them and shed water. Saw this on a friends 340 and the telescoping poles worked very well. Just a thought.

Yep! I did not mention that and it would be hard to see but those poles are telescoping. They collapse down for storage and allow for pitching if used to shed rain.

I found a picture of the shade with the supports collapsed creating a tilt in the canvas cover.

I've been looking into getting a SureShade for my boat as well. Some thoughts and info I've acquired, in no particular order.
  • A lot of Back Cove and Sabre boats come with SureShades from the factory. Many owners report that the electronics conk out after a couple years because the circuit boards are plain - they are not potted. A redesign of the motor MAY have changed this; I'm not sure.
  • The electric version can only be installed by a dealer; there is no self-install option.
  • The electric ones are expensive. I got a quotes for my boat of $9500-$10500 including installation costs.
  • Some folks feel that it's not worth the expense because their shade had to be mounted high and is more narrow than the cockpit. They felt that it was only useful when the sun was more or less directly overhead. It didn't provide enough shade after 1:30-2:00 pm.
  • SureShade has a new manual pull-out option called the MTX. You grip a release and pull out / push in. I personally like this option because it's roughly 1/2 the cost of the electric version, deploys faster, has less to break, and can be self-installed.

We looked at the sureshade as well, but the reviews of Sabre owners we knew were not encouraging. We went with something very similar to the Sea Ray camper back top. Something one of the NE dealers provides.
