420 DA Thread

Hi all - I am experiencing a weak horn ... that starts blowing fine and then after a second or so descends into a tired gasp. If I immediately try to rehonk the horn it continues with a tired gasp ... but if I wait 6 or 7 seconds to retry the horn it honks fine again for a second or two and then redescends into a gasp.

One of my dock neighbors suggested that it might be the sign of a weak battery as the horn draws quite a few amps. Does anybody know on the 42/44DA into which battery the horn is wired?

Well, I'd be guessing but your port batteries are your "house." So, I am guessing starboard side. Of course you could easily confirm this by simply disconnecting your easily accessed positive starboard battery terminals and then test your horn. Let us know....

Always disconnect negative battery cables first, especially on any vehicle or boat that has any kind of electronics on it, even if you think they are not involved with the system you are working on.

Does anyone have handy a chart showing fuel burn by RPM with the 450 Cummins on a 2004ish? Generally looking to understand 1K rpm fuel burn / economy vs 2150....

I'd greatly welcome the same information for CE 480's in an '05.

When it rains ..water collects in this dip or transition. Do you guys have the same problem? If so were you able to stop it?

I'm planning to flush the raw water system with Barnacle Buster. If I drain the muffler, does anyone know the full water capacity on the QSC engine? Youtube shows a video of 15 gallons of solution but that was a QSM11 engine.

On earlier posts I had detailed about removing the original defunct DVD player from above the Microwave in the galley.

I opted to not install another DVD player since it seems like even the one at home we hardly use.

I decided instead to convert the space where the DVD used to be to a spot where people can charge their iPhones and iPads as well as where they can plug in their iPhone or iPad to display the contents on the fold down TV in the salon. This will allow us to pre-download movies and TV shows from Amazon Prime or Netflix and then play them on the boat.

Here here is a link to the USB charger outlet I bought from Amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KK2GCCI

And here is a link to the adapter that allows you to play movies from your iPhone or iPad on the galley TV:

https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MD826AM/A/lightning-digital-av-adapter

Here is a pic of the charger I added so that people can plug their phones in to charge. It runs off of 12V which means it will work even if I do not have the generator running:

Hi All - I went ahead and replaced my starboard battery bank.

IMG_7873.jpeg The Starboard batteries that I removed were West Marine AGM 92 (15020241) which are currently on sale for $216.99.
IMG_7872.jpeg The battery had a "C4" sticker on it which I believe means it was manufactured in March 2014. So basically this battery lasted for 6 years 2 months (72 months).

Instead of replacing it with West Marine AGM batteries I opted to be "cheap" and use my Costco membership and get Interstate 27DC marine batteries for $87.99 each.

So my break even point ... is if the Costco Interstate batteries lasts at least 29 months. So go ahead and set a reminder in your calendar to check with me on ClubSeaRay and see if my Costco battery is still working fine in October 2022!!

So I got aboard a local 44DA on Wednesday. I really, REALLY liked it. It is not for sale and I was just given a tour arranged by my broker (who will be listing my 360DA very soon). The Admiral has two beefs:

1) The V berth looks very similar to our current one with the exception of the foot of the mattress being more square, but the head of the mattress seems more pinched than mine! I've read somewhere that someone had a custom made mattress that was a touch thicker that made the head area flare out a bit more, that might work!

2) But the real issue my wife is not currently able to get over is the bench seat next to the helm seat. The seat pan depth is way too short making it seem like the only way to be comfortable is to put your feet on the handrail or dash. Am I wrong?

Has anyone here changed that seating at all? (modded the bench seat, pulled the bench and replaced with something on a slide or swivel... anything...?)

P.S. I posted this same question on Facebook the other day

For #1 - yes in my opinion the V berth sucks and my wife & I seldom get a good night of sleep up there. if we were ever to start sleeping on the boat more often I would definitely have to buy a new mattress and or consider some sort of a different design…

For #2 - never heard a complaint about that one in the 2 years I have owned the boat...

We put a new mattress in its 8” thick.... we have more than enough room side to side.... I just commented this morning by far this is the best mattress and sleep out of our 3 beds.

helm seat is short for sure but not uncomfortable to me.... without redoing the whole thing not sure what you would do there

good luck

We also added an 8" thick mattress. We purchased a king sized foam mattress from amazon and cut it with a electric carving knife. It does help add a few inches to the head width if you flare it up the sides.

We put feet up on dash.

We bought our '05 420 this past winter but have yet to be able to cross the border to then sail it from MI to its new home in Toronto. It came with a brand new 7" mattress. No comments to offer on comfort or size. Either way, it is what it is cause even if the 1st Mate complains, I ain't buying another one. Looked and felt to be high end. Confident at least I'll be happy. Actual pic attached. The new protective cover is blue, mattress underneath.

We just bought a 10" foam mattress with a gel top and flared it at the head end. Cut it to pattern with an electric carving knife. Tonite will be the first time sleeping on it.
