IDEAS FOR A NEW BOW PULPIT----My 24' Sea Ray has a teak bow pulpit on it already, but the front is broken and I'm changing the anchor windlass from the capstan style to full chain gypsy style. Thus I need to make the bow pulpit longer in the back to position the chainhaus over the anchor locker. I looked into the cost of teak strips and total cost would be $500-700. Then I looked birch, maple or acacia butcher block. They are typically 1 1/2" thick and the cost for one of these pieces would be $90 for a maple piece. I want the wood look and not a fiberglass pulpit. I would apply varnish as a finish surface treatment. Has anyone thought of using butcher block as a pulpit. What are some pros and cons to using butcher block???

Anything other than teak will rot with 3-5 years. All that work would be for nothing. There are companies that fabricate teak pulpits and swim platforms for surprisingly reasonable prices.

What about mahogany? It glues and works better than teak. it is also a lot cheaper

Mahogany is a great option. I used mahogany several years ago for some benches on a sailboat. I reapplied spar varnish every year. Still looked good when I sold it several years later.

I have a teak pulpit that was an extra part to a Sea Ray I bought years ago...maybe a 230WE??? It's something I've kept for some reason, but would be more than happy to part with. I'll get it out this morning and take measurements and photos. It might be something you can use. I'm in north Metro Detroit.

Thanks. I’m looking for one that is 48” long. It needs to be that long to cover the anchor locker opening.

I think what I have, was made to do that. It is 48" long, 20" wide at the base for about 12", then tapers down to 17" wide the rest of the length. It is 1 1/2" thick and is laminated. There are a few plugs along the side so I am thinking there is maybe a threaded rod through the piece to help hold the laminations together? Not sure about how it's constructed. It looks like an oiled finish to me.
