I accidentally pushed the fresh water hose too far into the fresh water inlet port and now cannot withdraw it due to the chain hold the cap. I tried to remove the flashing but was unsuccessful. Any ideas?

By flashing you mean the deck plate that is the water fill fitting? Depending on the length of the hose from the deck plate to the tank it may not have enough slack to extend beyond the deck to take it apart. I'm not familiar with the 40 DA as I have a 44 DB but you should be able to gain access to the fill hose from inside the hull, disconnect it and remove the deck fitting to free the hose end. In future use a cut off section of hose with only the female fitting to attach to a hose to avoid getting it stuck.
Hope this helps. The deck fitting even with the screws removed is bonded to the deck with 3M 4000 or better so you will need to use a sturdy putty knife to free it. It goes with out saying, use 4000 to re-bed it when you put it back.

Thanks for the advice! Yes, my first order of business when I get out of this jam is to cut the end off of the hose! I just never dreamed it would push through with the chain in place.

I've reread this post a few times now and can't help but keep coming back to this single thought - this is very much something that would happen to me. :):)

Given my patience for such self-induced situations I would have likely cut the end off the fresh water hose, left it in the filler tube and dealt with it "come winter layup". ha.

Good luck!

i'd be tempted to pull harder until it comes free. You will likely break the chain, but that is not really crucial if you are careful when you remove cap when filling the tank. Just don't lose the cap if you decide to yank the hose out of the fill hole.

As Carpe mentioned, removing the deck plate (flashing) isn't going to help you. Short of removing the hose on the underside, just keep trying different ways to pull it - even just getting Superman on it like SBW1 said.

Is it possible that the hose end is in far enough to get stuck on the lower lip of the deck plate nipple? You might try pushing it in further and/or twisting and pulling. Try jiggling back and forth, in and out, as you pull as well.

Thanks for all the responses. The hose tip is beyond the deck plate and can easily feed down into the tank. I have yanked, twisted, manipulated the chain, cursed...nothing has worked. I, too, have considered just cutting the hose and letting drop in the holding tank but am sure there would be some unfore$een consequence. Astroglide perhaps...hmmmm

If you're sure it's just the chain, you should be able to power through it. I can't imagine you're going to hurt the deck plate in any way - the chain will the "weak link" in the system. If, however, when you pull the hose back up, you feel a more solid "click/clunk" when it stops moving, that's probably the deck plate nipple you're feeling. But, then, it could be a combination of that and the chain with the chain wedging the hose against the end pipe nipple. What about cutting the chain and pulling it out of the hole and then pulling the hose out?

Water based, good choice. :)

If you do this you need to take pictures and share. Were I ever to be caught dumping "intimate lube" into my freshwater tank by my dock neighbors...this would be cocktail time fodder for YEARS....

Removing the chain would probably solve the problem, although I can’t be sure it is not catching on the lower lip. It feel very solid. What would be the downside to simply cutting the hose and allow it to drop in the tank?

That would be like sweeping the dirt under the rug.

I'd cut the chain before dropping the hose into the tank. In reality, probably wouldn't cause any issues as it's too big to block the pickup tube. Cutting the chain might be all you need to get a little more space to free the hose end.

Another thing I'd try before dropping the hose in there is to cut the hose with enough of it still sticking out to get a good hold on. Then, stick a stiff dowel, an extra long screwdriver, or similar down into the hose - that would give you some power to try and lever the hose end away from the nipple. If that doesn't work, then cut the chain and retry.

Do you have access to pull the fill hose off the fill pipe? I can on mine. The connection is right behind a cockpit cabinet. I loosen two hose clamps and the fill hose pulls right off the pipe.

Got it out!! My friend used a thin filet knife to slide beside the hose head and push out on the plastic conduit enough to dislodge. Whew! No more being a Searay nerd with a hose hanging out the side of the boat. That loses cool points on the lake!

Nerds come in all types, like the ones who cruise around with fenders still hanging off the sides!!

Whats wrong with leaving your fenders on? I'd rather be cruising than constantly removing and installing fenders!!
